Silver Train upsets Lost in the Fog
By Mike Welsch   Daily Racing Form, October 29, 2005

The $1 million Breeders' Cup Sprint became a tale of two 3-year-olds after Silver Train registered a surprising head victory over Taste of Paradise, and Lost in the Fog's unbeaten streak came to an equally shocking end Saturday at Belmont Park.

Silver Train rallied to a head victory over Taste of Paradise, then had to survive a claim of foul by jockey Garrett Gomez aboard the runner-up before giving trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. his first Breeders' Cup victory.

Lost in the Fog, who entered the Sprint unbeaten in 10 starts, held a narrow advantage into the stretch before faltering through the final furlong to finish seventh as the 3-5 favorite.

Silver Train, a 3-year-old son of Old Trieste, paid $25.80 after covering six furlongs in 1:08.86 over a fast track.

Race Comments: SILVER TRAIN settled in good position along the inside, angled out to launch his bid on the turn, advanced four wide into the stretch, closed the gap to challenge in midstretch, surged to the front inside the furlong marker then was all out to hold off TASTE OF PARADISE in the final strides. TASTE OF PARADISE was unhurried for a half, saved ground through the turn, angled out in upper stretch, steadied while lacking room nearing the three-sixteenths pole, swung out for clear sailing in midstretch then finished fastest but could not get up. A claim of foul lodged by the rider of TASTE OF PARADISE against the winner was disallowed. LION TAMER stumbled and was pinched back soon after the start, raced far back for a half, angled out leaving the turn then rallied belatedly from outside to gain a share. ATTILA'S STORM bobbled at the start, rushed up along the rail, dueled along the inside into upper stretch and tired from his early efforts. ELUSIVE JAZZ bumped soundly at the start, raced in the middle of the pack while five wide for a half and finished evenly. LIFESTYLE steadied early after being bumped then stumbling at the start, angled to the inside then never reached contention. LOST IN THE FOG was bounced around between horses at the start, rushed up from outside, stalked four wide for nearly a half, took the lead at the quarter pole, continued on the front into midstretch then faltered in the final eighth. IMPERIALISM never reached contention while five wide. GYGISTAR raced wide throughout, moved up briefly on the far turn then faded on the turn. WILDCAT HEIR bumped in tight at the start, dueled between horses for a half, faltered on the turn, stumbled and unseated his rider after the finish and was vanned off. BATTLE WON pressed the pace between horses to the turn and gave way.

Career Highlights:

  • Squarely in the race for 2005 Horse of the Year and Champion 3-Year-Old Male, Lost In The Fog has yet to suffer a defeat in his 9-race career.
  • Grade 1 winner of Saratoga’s King’s Bishop, he is a 3-time Grade 2 winner of the Carry Back, Riva Ridge and Swale Stakes – all four races over different tracks.
  • Won the Riva Ridge on Belmont Stakes day, proving he could handle the Breeders’ Cup home surface and a large crowd.
  • Northern California-based colt dominated a maiden race last November at Golden Gate Fields over his home track in his career debut, then set the 6-1/2 furlong track record at Arizona’s Turf Paradise in his second career start to wrap up a 2-for-2 juvenile campaign.

In the Genes:

  • Sire, Lost Soldier, is a son of the great producer Danzig. He stood for just $7,500 in 2005.
  • Sire, Lost Soldier, won 11 of 45 starts in a durable career on turf and dirt, racing in Europe, Dubai and the United States, winning multiple graded stakes in the Midwest.
  • Dam, Cloud Break, is an unraced daughter of Dr. Carter. Grand dam, Wistful, won the Grade 2 Hemstead at Belmont and was second in the 1-1/4 mile Lost In The FogDelaware Handicap.

Best Case For:

  • Lost In The Fog has won at the six-furlong distance and beyond, showing that blinding speed needed to succeed and the guts to handle a dogfight if he’s put to a test. If you’re a speed-figure player, he’s never had a Beyer figure lower than 102. We know he handles Belmont just fine. Trainer Greg Gilchrest almost won the ’94 Sprint with filly Soviet Problem, so he knows the terrain as well.

Biggest Knock Against:

  • Lost In The Fog has battle quarter cracks this year and has had an incredibly tough campaign, even if some of his detractors claim he “hasn’t faced anyone worthy.” His eight races this year have been at seven different tracks and the Breeders’ Cup will be his seventh cross-country flight of the year. He’ll need a break at some point, but just when will that be?

Bet You Didn’t Know:

  • Only three US-based sophomore males have won the Sprint, Cajun Beat in 2003, Squirtle Squirt in 2001 and Reraise in 1998.
