Intercontinental wire-to-wire
By Steve Andersen
Daily Racing Form, October 29, 2005
The Breeders' Cup dynasty continues for the remarkable broodmare Hasili.
Saturday at Belmont Park, Hasili's daughter Intercontinental led throughout the $1,060,000 Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf to pull a 15-1 upset. The win came four years after Banks Hill, another Hasili foal, won the BC Filly and Mare Turf over this course.
Intercontinental ($32.20) gave jockey Rafael Bejarano his first win in a Breeders' Cup, and his ride was credited by winning trainer Bobby Frankel as a key to the victory.

| Race Comments: INTERCONTINENTAL (GB) took the lead soon after the start, opened a clear advantage along the backstretch, was taken in hand midway down the backstretch, shook off a mild challenge from WEND leaving the far turn, extended her lead approaching the quarter pole, maintained a comfortable advantage into midstretch, drifted out inside the furlong marker then held sway under steady right hand urging. OUIJA BOARD (GB) was unhurried for a half while four wide, continued wide while five deep on the turn, launched a rally from outside entering the stretch then closed steadily in the middle of the track but couldn't overtake the winner. FILM MAKER clipped heels and stumbled in the early stages, was shuffled back nearing the first turn, raced far back for seven furlongs, circled four wide while gaining on the turn then closed late from outside to gain a share. WONDER AGAIN was outrun for six furlongs, made a run four wide to reach contention on the far turn, steadied in traffic on the turn then lacked a strong closing bid. FAVOURABLE TERMS (GB) broke in the air at the start, was outrun for a mile, advanced four wide on the turn then failed to threaten with a mild late rally. WEND prompted the pace along the rail, made a mild run inside the winner to challenge briefly on the turn and steadily tired thereafter. ANGARA (GB) checked leaving the gate then angled to the inside, was outrun to the far turn, rallied along the inside on the turn and lacked a strong closing bid. MEGAHERTZ (GB) never reached contention after trailing most of the way. KAREN'S CAPER chased four wide to the far turn and steadily tired thereafter. MONA LISA (GB) settled in good position for seven furlongs, lodged a mild bid on the turn and faded in the stretch. LUAS LINE (IRE) raced in traffic along the rail entering the backstretch and faded after going a mile. FLIP FLOP (FR) raced up close along the rail, edged closer midway on the turn, steadied nearing the quarter pole then gave way soon thereafter. RISKAVERSE raced in hand just off the early pace and gave way midway on the turn. SUNDROP (JPN) tired badly after a mile then was vanned off after the finish. |

Ouija Board
Owner:
Lord Derby
Breeder:
Stanley Estate and Stud Company
Trainer:
Edward Dunlop
Jockey:
Kieren Fallon

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Newmarket, England Purchase Price: Not available. Best Known For: Winning the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Owner: Lord Derby Breeder: Stanley Estate and Stud Company Trainer: Edward Dunlop (4-1-0-0 Breeders’ Cup, 3-1-0-0 BC F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: Kieren Fallon (10-2-1-2 Breeders’ Cup, 4-2-1-0 BC F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - Defending champion in this race has made only two starts since last year’s splash at Lone Star Park, fending off nagging injuries and illnesses.
- Nightmarish 2005 return when finishing seventh of eight, beaten nearly 30 lengths, in the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes at York in June. Lost the shoe on her right front foot, the same foot that has been problematic to her all season.
- Odds-on favorite reported home a comfortable winner in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf, her first and only American start to date.
- Dream 2004 season also saw her finish second in the G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp from a ghastly No. 20 post position, and become the 10th filly in history to pull the prestigious daily double of winning the English and Irish Oaks.
- Won one of three starts as a juvenile in 2003.
In the Genes: - Sire, Cape Cross, was a premier miler, winning the G1 Lockinge at eight furlongs and finishing second in the G1 Prix Jacques le Marois.
- Sire, Cape Cross, entered stud in 2000 and was the UK’s leading first-crop sire in 2003.
- Sire, Cape Cross, finished ninth in the 1998 Breeders’ Mile.
- Dam, Selection Board, lost both career starts in the UK. She has produced eight foals to race and Ouija Board is her first and only stakes winner to date.
- Dam, Selection Board, is full-sister to G1 Arlington Million winner Teleprompter.
Best Case For: - She was remarkable in winning last year’s Filly & Mare Turf over an extremely tight Lone Star Park course that could have compromised a less-talented filly. Belmont’s expansive turf course plays into her strategy better, with an oft-slow start and furious finish. In short, there’s more margin for error and she’s good enough to not need additional help.
Biggest Knock Against: - After battling quarter cracks on her right front, losing the shoe on that foot in her seasonal return race took matters from bad to worse. Ouija Board was found to have suffered a stress fracture in that right front leg after her seasonal comeback and her subsequent starts were pushed back by a slowed recovery. The physical issues and light workload this year cloud the picture for what many considered last year’s closest thing to a BC "cinch."
Bet You Didn’t Know: - The only Filly & Mare Turf champion to defend her title was 2001 winner Banks Hill, who finished second in 2002 behind fellow Bobby Frankel trainee Starine at Arlington.

Wonder Again
Owner:
Joan and John Phillips, Richard Santulli and Bobby Flay
Breeder:
Phillips Racing Partnership
Trainer:
James Toner
Jockey:
Edgar Prado

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Belmont Park (Elmont, NY) Purchase Price: Home-bred for the owner. Best Known For: Soft-turf success in major New York stakes events. Owners: Joan and John Phillips of Lexington, Ky.; Richard Santulli; Bobby Flay Breeder: Phillips Racing Partnership Trainer: James Toner (4-1-0-1 Breeders’ Cup, 2-1-0-1 F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: Edgar Prado (41-0-4-4 Breeders’ Cup, 4-0-1-1 F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - Six-year-old mare was the third-place finisher in last year’s Filly & Mare Turf behind Ouija Board and Film Maker.
- Grade 1 winner of the 2004 Diana Handicap at Saratoga and the 2002 Garden City Breeders’ Cup at Belmont Park.
- Millionaire earner has made just four starts this year by design, three of them at Belmont Park. Her one road trip was a strong fourth-place effort, beaten only a half-length, in a scrambling Grade 1 Beverly D finish at Arlington Park.
- New York favorite has made 19 of her 23 starts in the Empire State, winning graded stakes on her home turf in 2002, 2003 and 2004.
In the Genes: - Full sister to legendary Japanese performer Grass Wonder, winner of 9 of 15 starts and just under $6 million. He was Japan’s dominant horse of the late 1990s.
- Sire, Silver Hawk, won 3 of 8 starts in England and Ireland and was a Group 3 winner and 2nd in the Group 1 Irish Derby in 1982.
- Sire, Silver Hawk, has produced Epsom Derby winner Benny The Dip, Canadian International winner Mutafaweq, Beverly D winner Memories of Silver and Hong Kong Vase winner Red Bishop.
- Dam, Ameriflora, never raced, but was sister to 2 different winners of Keeneland’s G1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.
Best Case For: - Wonder Again’s connections kept her in training this season strictly to run in this race because of her affinity for Belmont Park and the likelihood she would get the kind of soft, giving ground she relishes. A judicious, well-spotted four-race campaign with little travel could have her sitting on a rewarding curtain call. She was beaten less than two lengths for all the money in this race last year despite traveling to Texas.
Biggest Knock Against: - Her only two wins in a two-year span from September 2003 through September 2005 came over a 26-day span last summer on boggy turf courses. Wonder Again hasn’t shown the same fire to win as she once did, winning five of her first 11 turf starts before the aforementioned span.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - Edgar Prado has ridden Wonder Again in 20 of her 21 career turf races, missing only the May 3, 2003 Beaugay Handicap when he was piloting Peace Rules to a third-place finish in the same day’s Kentucky Derby.

Megahertz
Owner:
Michael Bello
Breeder:
Chevely Park Stud
Trainer:
Bobby Frankel
Jockey:
Alex Solis

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Hollywood Park (Inglewood, Cal.) Purchase Price: private purchase for the owner. Best Known For: Frantic last-to-first finishes over the past five seasons. Owner: Michael Bello Breeder: Chevely Park Stud Trainer: Bobby Frankel (63-3-8-7 Breeders’ Cup, 10-1-1-0 BC F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: Alex Solis (47-3-7-4 Breeders’ Cup, 1-0-0-0 BC F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - 12-time stakes winner in America with earnings near $2 million, Megahertz has been one of the most consistent, veteran performers on the scene since 2001.
- Mare will be making her third Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf appearance, rallying late for fifth in the 2003 renewal at Santa Anita but never firing last year at Lone Star when eleventh.
- Six-year-old rattled off three straight graded stakes wins this season in California, and narrowly missed a fourth by a neck in Arlington’s Grade 1 Beverly D.
- Scored her biggest career win in 2003 when capturing Del Mar’s Grade 1 Mabee Handicap.
- Began her career in France and Italy in 2001, winning only 1 of 8 starts. She subsequently won her first five starts in America when joining Team Frankel.
In the Genes: - Sire, Pivotal, was European Champion Sprinter after wins in the Group 1 Nunthorpe and Group 2 King’s Stand Stakes. He won 4 of 6 starts in a brief career.
- As a stallion, Pivotal best known for producing 2002 Eclipse Champion Older Turf Mare Golden Apples, fourth-place finisher as the favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Also sired Europe’s 2002 Champion Sprinter Kyllachy.
- Dam, Heavenly Ray, won 2 of 8 starts in England. Her first foal produced was G1 winner Megahertz.
Best Case For: - She came into the 2004 Breeders’ Cup off of an impossible 152-day layoff, so you can pretty much disregard that lackluster performance. Megahertz’s 2005 form looks better than ever, and she even showed for the first time the ability to race well outside of California and on soft turf with a strong Beverly D performance.
Biggest Knock Against: - Megahertz rides in the way-back machine, as in way back in the pack. Her best efforts come when she spots the field at least 10 lengths, gets an honest pace to run at and gets a clear run to fire furiously through the stretch. In other words, a lot can go wrong. Notice that from April 2002 through the end of August, she had 10 victories and every one was by a single length or less. It has to go very right for Megahertz, but often does.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - Megahertz is a rare European claim, haltered in her second career start at France’s Saint Cloud for $31,378 by trainer Nicholas Clement. She was sold to American interests at the end of that 2001 season.

Film Maker
Owner:
Courtlandt Farm (Donald Adam)
Breeder:
TAC Holdings Inc.
Trainer:
Graham Motion
Jockey:
TBD

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Fair Hill Training Center (Elkton, Md.) Purchase Price: private purchase for the owner. Best Known For: Runner-up finish in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Owner: Courtlandt Farm (Donald Adam) of College Station, Texas. Breeder: TAC Holdings Inc. Trainer: Graham Motion (3-1-1-0 Breeders’ Cup, 1-0-1-0 BC F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: tbd Career Highlights: - 16-to-1 shot chased home favored Ouija Board in this race last year, beaten by only one-and-one-half lengths.
- Has continued her fine into 2005, winning the Grade 3 Gallorette on the Preakness undercard and narrowly missing in the Glens Falls and New York Handicap, both Grade 2 events.
- Consistent performer earned top four placings in nine straight graded stakes races from April 2004 through late September 2005 winning a pair of Grade 3 stakes along the way.
- Grade 1 winner of the 2003 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland as a three-year-old, capping a career-best, four-win season.
In the Genes: - Sire, Dynaformer won 6 of 30 starts for $671,207 including the G2 Jersey Derby.
- Sire, Dynaformer, has produced 6 Breeders’ Cup starters, including 2 in last year’s Distaff (Critical Eye, Starrer).
- Sire, Dynaformer, best known as stallion for producing millionaire Perfect Drift and graded turf stakes-winning mares Riskaverse, Vergennes and Collect The Cash.
- Dam, Miss Du Bois, lost all 15 career starts in the US. She has produced two foals to race.
Best Case For: - Film Maker is a push-button filly and can be placed in the race just about anywhere a rider asks her. Trainer Graham Motion is one of the nation’s absolute best conditioners, especially with a grass route horse. She’s remarkably true and consistent, finishing in the superfecta in 18 of her first 20 career starts.
Biggest Knock Against: - She had an absolute dream trip in last year’s Filly & Mare Turf, chasing a lone speed runner who had little or no chance to wire the field, Moscow Burning, and getting the jump on all of the main rivals her were one-run closers. She made a ton of sense last year from a handicapping standpoint, despite form that was suspect at Grade 1 levels.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - Film Maker had four different jockeys in her first four starts of 2005 Jerry Bailey, John Velazquez, Javier Castellano and Todd Kabel.

Angara
Owner:
Martin Schwartz
Breeder:
Dayton Investments Ltd.
Trainer:
Patrick Biancone
Jockey:
Gary Stevens

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Saratoga Racecourse (Saratoga Springs, NY) Purchase Price: private purchase for the owner. Best Known For: Winning the 2004 Grade 1 Beverly D at Arlington. Owner: Martin Schwartz of New York, NY. Breeder: Dayton Investments Ltd. Trainer: Patrick Biancone (12-0-2-0 Breeders’ Cup, 0-0-0-0 BC F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: Gary Stevens (93-8-15-10 Breeders’ Cup, 3-0-0-0 BC F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - French import has made quite a splash in her “rookie” season in the US, winning America’s premier summer ladies’ grass contest, the Beverly D at Arlington.
- Four-year-old began her career overseas in 2004 with trainer Elie Lellouche before heading to Biacone’s California stable last winter.
- Late-runner appreciated a move east to Keeneland in the spring, registering her first stakes win in the Grade 3 Bewitch, also reveling in the stretch out to 12 furlongs.
- Twice faced the boys this year in New York’s toughest turf tests, the Grade 1 Manhattan and the Grade 1 Man o’ War, finishing fifth of 11 starters in both heavyweight clashes.
In the Genes: - Dam, Ange Bleu, is a half-sister to 1993 Breeders’ Cup Classic stunner Arcangues.
- Sire, Alzao, is a Group 3-winning son of the late, great stallion Lyphard.
- As a stallion, Alzao best known for producing US Grade 1-winning turf mare Alpride, as well as winners of the English, Irish and Italian Oaks. He’s had a way with the ladies, if you will.
- Dam, Ange Bleu, failed to win a race during her short French career, but has produced French Group 2 winner Actrice as well as Grade 1 winner Angara.
Best Case For: - She won the Beverly D on 14 days’ rest and trainer Biancone has been trying to keep her extremely active while on top of her game. The longer, the better for this deep-winded filly who has the ability to punch home no matter if she’s three lengths off a slow pace or 10 lengths behind a rapid one. If she’s in the mix at the eighth-pole, it will be a tall order for anyone to get by her
Biggest Knock Against: - In this day and age, it’s odd to see a Grade 1-caliber runner with 10 starts on the year before the Breeder’s Cup. She’s raced at least once a month for nine straight months, and even though she does her best running on shorter rests, you have to wonder when the lemon will be squeezed dry. Who knows if it will, though?
Bet You Didn’t Know: - Trainer Patrick Biancone missed sweeping the inaugural two editions of the Breeders’ Cup Turf by a pair of necks first with All Along in 1984 and then again with Strawberry Road II in 1985.

Riskaverse
Owner:
Fox Ridge Farm
Breeder:
Fox Ridge Farm
Trainer:
Patrick Kelly
Jockey:
Jose Santos

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Belmont Park (Elmont, NY) Purchase Price: home-bred for the owner. Best Known For: Upsetting the 2004 and 2005 editions of the Grade 1 Flower Bowl. Owner: Fox Ridge Farm (Peter Schiff) of Oyster Bay, NY Breeder: Fox Ridge Farm Trainer: Patrick Kelly (9-0-0-0 Breeders' Cup, 3-0-0-0 F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: Jose Santos (59-7-2-4 Breeders' Cup, 3-0-1-0 F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - Three-time Grade 1 winner of more than $1 million, Riskaverse has been a mainstay on the New York grass scene since 2001.
- Six-year-old won just once in 2004 and 2005, but picked a fine time to fire, winning Belmont's Grade 1 Flower Bowl Invitational in successive years. He had finished off the board in her three prior starts in 2005 before the Flower Bowl renaissance.
- Highlight of her 2003 season was winning the Grade 3 Cardinal Handicap at Churchill Downs.
- Made her presence known nationally for the first time in 2002 when she won Keeneland's Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup.
In the Genes: - Sire, Dynaformer won 6 of 30 starts for $671,207 including the G2 Jersey Derby.
- Sire, Dynaformer, has produced 6 Breeders' Cup starters, including 2 in last year's Distaff (Critical Eye, Starrer).
- Sire, Dynaformer, best known as stallion for producing millionaire Perfect Drift and graded turf stakes winners Vergennes and Collect The Cash.
- Dam, The Bink, was 2nd in the G3 Interborough Hcp.
- Dam, The Bink, won 3 of 19 starts for $135,889.
Best Case For: - When you've won five of 13 over the turf course you're competing on including that track's biggest race in your division two years running it's hard to not consider you a contender. That's the scenario for Riskaverse, who has been stellar on the Belmont inner turf course in her career and two straight Flower Bowl wins is as good as it gets in the Big Apple.
Biggest Knock Against: - Riskaverse has finished seventh, sixth and eighth in her three prior Filly & Mare Turf attempts, sent off at long odds each time (27-to-1, 45-to-1 and 13-to-1). She was coming off victories in two of those three prior years, yet failed to make any dent on the championship day.
Bet You Didn't Know: - Riskaverse will become the first filly or mare in history to compete in the Breeders' Cup four times, surpassing three-time participants like Fran's Valentine, Heavenly Prize, Serena's Song, Spain, Take Charge Lady and Xtra Heat.

Mona Lisa
Owner:
Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier
Breeder:
Meon Valley Stud
Trainer:
Aidan O'Brien
Jockey:
Kieren Fallon

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Ballydoyle Yard (Ireland) Purchase Price: unknown. Best Known For: Runner-up finish in the 2005 Group 1 Prix de l'Opera. Owner: Michael Tabor and Mrs. John Magnier of London Breeder: Meon Valley Stud Trainer: Aidan O'Brien (30-3-5-4 Breeders' Cup, 3-0-1-1 BC F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: Kieren Fallon (10-2-1-2 Breeders' Cup, 4-2-0-1 BC F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - Though she's won just once in 14 starts, the talented import has placed in some of Europe's premier races the Irish Oaks, Coronation Stakes and most recently the Prix de l'Opera.
- Had traffic trouble in her lone US foray this season, finishing seventh in a wild Beverly D. scramble at Arlington Park behind the likes of Angara and Megahertz.
- Scored her lone career win in the listed Irish Stallion Stakes at The Curragh on Aug. 1.
- Second Breeders' Cup appearance for filly, who finished 11th of 12 in last year's Juvenile Fillies on the main track.
In the Genes: - Sire, Giant's Causeway, was a narrow runner-up in the 2001 Breeders' Cup Classic at Belmont to Tiznow. He was a Group 1 winner in France at 2, and earned nearly $3 million in his 3-year-old season alone with wins in the Irish Champion, Juddmonte International, Eclipse, Sussex et al.
- From the first crop of Giant's Causeway runners to race. His first crop included such runners as brilliant French Group 1 winner Shamardal and Kentucky Derby entrant Noble Causeway. He sired four Group 1 winners in his first year.
- Dam, Colorsnap, is an unraced daughter of Shirley Heights. She has produced the likes of Italian Champion Two-Year-Old Filly Croeso Cariad.
- Dam, Colorsnap, is half-sister to Group 1 winners Cezanne and Colorspin, who also was dam of English champions Kayftara and Opera House.
Best Case For: - Mona Lisa ran perhaps the best race of her life in the Prix de l'Opera, outrunning the likes of Alexander Goldrun in France's most important ladies event of the autumn. She comes into the F&M Turf in peak form, and trainer O'Brien finished two-three in this race in 2003 with 46-to-1 L'Ancresse and 14-to-1 Yesterday, so she certainly would be a live longshot.
Biggest Knock Against: - Mona Lisa simply doesn't win often, witnessed by 13 losses in 14 starts. Her two starts in America both have resulted in off-the-board finishes, albeit she had excuses in both attempts due to surface and troubled trips. But, she's earned nearly $300,000 being a bridesmaid.
Bet You Didn't Know: - Only one of trainer Aidan O'Brien's 11 all-time two-year-olds to start on Breeders' Cup Day has returned for a subsequent championship day program (2002 Juvenile third-place finisher Hold That Tiger came back to run fifth in the 2003 Classic).

Wend
Owner:
Claiborne Farm
Breeder:
Claiborne Farm
Trainer:
Bill Mott
Jockey:
John Velazquez

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Belmont Park (Elmont, N.Y.) Purchase Price: home-bred for the owner. Best Known For: Winning the 2005 Grade 2 New York Handicap. Owner: Claiborne Farm of Lexington, Ky. Breeder: Claiborne Farm Trainer: Bill Mott (41-5-6-4 Breeders' Cup, 1-0-0-0 BC F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: John Velazquez (47-6-4-4 Breeders' Cup, 4-1-1-0 BC F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - Late bloomer did not debut until November of her three-year-old season in 2004, but blossomed into a top American turf runner this year.
- Exits a late-running second-place finish to Intercontinental in the Grade 2 Winstar Galaxy at Keeneland, traveling one mile on grass.
- Five-race win streak to open 2005 included the listed Hollywood Wildcat Stakes at Calder and the Grade 2 New York Handicap at Belmont Park.
- Finished a disappointing sixth in the Grade 1 Beverly D. at Arlington, fading late in the stretch.
In the Genes: - Sire, Pulpit, was the 1997 Kentucky Derby morning line favorite after wins in the Fountain of Youth and Blue Grass Stakes. He finished fourth in the Derby and was retired with a knee injury.
- As a stallion, Pulpit has produced the likes of Grade 1 winner Sky Mesa, Grade 1 turf winner Stroll, and 2005 Grade 2 winner Oratory.
- Dam, Thread, is a Claiborne Farm home-bred stakes winner.
- Wend is the sixth generation of a female family bred by the Hancock family of Claiborne Farm.
Best Case For: - Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott has been nothing short of spectacular in 2005 on grass even by his lofty standards. Wend ran a strong second in the one-mile Galaxy, which should set her up nicely as a prep for the lengthier Filly & Mare Turf. She beat leading US candidates Film Maker and Wonder Again on the square in the New York Handicap, despite breaking terribly and rushing up to contention.
Biggest Knock Against: - Wend's worst performance lifetime on turf came in what most experts consider the year's definitive Filly & Mare Turf division stakes race, the Beverly D. at Arlington. She had a good trip in that affair, but came up empty against heavyweights Angara, Megahertz et al. The yielding ground could have been the culprit, which also could be a concern with the heavy October rains that have fallen in New York.
Bet You Didn't Know: - Claiborne Farm's only Breeders' Cup starter all-time on grass was Lure, who won the Mile in back-to-back attempts (1992 and 1993) before failing in his three-peat bid in 1994.

Intercontinental
Owner:
Juddmonte Farms
Breeder:
Juddmonte Farms
Trainer:
Bobby Frankel
Jockey:
Jerry Bailey

Division: Filly & Mare Turf Home Base: Belmont Park (Elmont, N.Y.) Purchase Price: home-bred for the owner. Best Known For: Winning the 2004 Grade 1 Matriarch. Owner: Juddmonte Farms (Khalid Abdullah) of Saudi Arabia Breeder: Juddmonte Farms Trainer: Bobby Frankel (63-3-8-7 Breeders' Cup, 10-1-1-0 BC F&M Turf) Regular Jockey: Jerry Bailey (95-14-11-12 Breeders' Cup, 6-2-1-1 BC F&M Turf) Career Highlights: - $1.2 million earner has won 4 of 6 starts this year, including the Grade 2 WinStar Galaxy at Keeneland and the Grade 2 Palomar Breeders' Cup at Del Mar in succession.
- Also won 4 of 6 starts in 2004, featuring her first and only Grade 1 win of her career, Hollywood Park's season-ending Matriarch at one mile.
- Amazing 12-of-21 career mark and has been Grade 1 or Group 1 placed at ages two, three, four and five.
- Began her career in France before coming to the Frankel barn in the winter of 2003. Overseas, she was third in the English 1000 Guineas and Grand Criterium.
In the Genes: - Full-sister to 2001 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winner Banks Hill.
- Late sire, Danehill (who passed in 2003), has produced such champion turf runners as 2001 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf queen Banks Hill and record-setting European miler Rock Of Gibraltar, an unlucky second in the 2002 BC Mile at Arlington.
- Sire, Danehill, is a son of route influence Danzig, but was one of Europe's top sprinters of 1989, winning the Group 1 Ladbroke Sprint Cup.
- Dam, Hasili, has been one of the most remarkable broodmares of the past few decades, producing five Group 1 or Grade 1 winners: Heat Haze, Banks Hill, Cacique, Dansili and Intercontinental.
Best Case For: - She's got an impeccable pedigree and comes into the Filly & Mare Turf in as good as form as ever. Trainer Bobby Frankel won this race with Starine in 2002 and always has been at his best with turf mares.
Biggest Knock Against: - Intercontinental will be stretched thin at the Filly & Mare Turf's distance of one-mile-and-three-eighths. In fact, she's never raced farther than nine furlongs, so her Breeders' Cup date will be a full quarter-mile longer than she's ever attempted in a race. Intercontinental is 0-for-2 lifetime in races longer than one-mile-and-one-sixteenth.
Bet You Didn't Know: - This year's Filly & Mare Turf will mark the fourth time in the past five years that a daughter out of super broodmare Hasili has been in the starting gate. Banks Hill contested the race in 2001 and 2002, Heat Haze in 2003 and now Intercontinental in 2005.

- Group 3 winner in England of the Neil Gwynn Stakes at Newmarket, which was her seasonal debut in April.
- Filly & Mare Turf will be her sixth consecutive start in Group or Grade 1 company.
- Won 1 of 2 starts in England as a two-year-old, both on the Polytrack at Lingfield.
In the Genes: - Sire, War Chant, won the 2000 Breeders' Cup Mile at Churchill Downs, earning more than $1.1 million in a career that saw him go from a leading Kentucky Derby contender to a grass star.
- From the first crop of War Chant runners to race, which includes Grade 3 winner Chatahoochee War and listed Oceanside Stakes winner El Roblar.
- Dam, Miss Caerleona, won 5 of 14 starts and just under $260,000 as a grade 3 stakes winner of Churchill Downs' Cardinal Handicap. She also was stakes-placed in France.
- Half-sister to Grade 2 Davona Dale winner Miss Coronado.
Best Case For: - As a late, May 13 foal, Karen's Caper has blossomed at age three. She competed at the highest levels in Europe, facing such established female stars as Attraction, Alexander Goldrun, Miads Causeway and Virginia Waters. She had a successful indoctrination to American racing with an impressive runner-up effort at Keeneland on Oct. 15, missing by the scantest of margins despite prolonged traffic trouble. Trainer John Gosden won the inaugural Breeders' Cup Mile in 1984 with another European filly who received American race experience prior Royal Heroine.
Biggest Knock Against: - The Filly & Mare Turf will be her longest career test at 1-1/4 miles, and she's only attempted one race beyond a mile to date. Sire, War Chant, was stellar at middle distances (5-for-5 up to 1-1/16 miles), but lost his only two career starts beyond 1-1/16 miles (Santa Anita Derby and Kentucky Derby).
Bet You Didn't Know: - Karen's Caper is named for the wife of Houston Texans' head coach Dom Capers. The owner of Karen's Caper is Robert McNair's Stonerside Stable. McNair is the owner of the NFL franchise, and the Capers family has been regular guests of McNair's at some of the sport's biggest races.
