Folklore gives Prado first Cup
By David Grening
Daily Racing Form, October 29, 2005
With an assist from trainer D. Wayne Lukas and a razor-sharp mount in Folklore, jockey Edgar Prado finally ended his Breeders' Cup drought Saturday at Belmont Park.
Confirming that her performance in the Grade 1 Matron last month was not a fluke, Folklore put away an early challenge from Knights Templar, opened up a large advantage in midstretch, and had more than enough to hold off Wild Fit to win the $1,060,000 Juvenile Fillies by 1 1/4 lengths.
Wild Fit, off last and forced to steady midway around the turn, rallied in the stretch to be second, 4 3/4 lengths ahead of Original Spin. Ex Caelis, also trained by Lukas, finished fourth, followed by Sensation, Knights Templar, Adieu, Along the Sea, She Says It Best, and Diamond Omi.

| Race Comments: FOLKLORE took the lead soon after the start, alternated for the lead along the backstretch, stalked KNIGHTS TEMPLAR while well off the rail entering the far turn, regained command approaching the quarter pole, extended her margin in upper stretch, maintained a comfortable advantage into deep stretch and held off WILD FIT under steady right hand encouragement. WILD FIT dropped back after breaking outward at the start, raced well back while trailing for five furlongs, launched her bid leaving the far turn, closed the gap midway on the turn, steadied behind SENSATION in traffic at the five-sixteenths pole, swung five wide approaching the quarter pole, took up chase after the winner in upper stretch and finished well in the middle of the track to best the others. ORIGINAL SPIN was bumped a bit at the start, worked her way between horses along the backstretch, raced in traffic briefly nearing the far turn, split horses while gaining midway on the turn, moved into contention while angling four wide at the top of the stretch then lacked a strong closing bid. EX CAELIS in tight at the start, moved up from outside, raced between horses for a half, angled out on the turn, advanced five wide into the stretch, made a run to threaten in upper stretch but couldn't sustain her bid. SENSATION raced between rivals while well back for a half, checked in traffic on the turn, angled wide at the quarter pole and finished evenly. KNIGHTS TEMPLAR rushed up along the rail, took the lead before going a half, showed the way to the turn, yielded to the winner at the five-sixteenths pole and steadily tired thereafter. ADIEU chased the leaders while four wide for five furlongs and gave way abruptly on the turn. ALONG THE SEA bumped at the start, raced up close along the rail for six furlongs and gave way. SHE SAYS IT BEST stumbled at the start then never threatened while five wide throughout. DIAMOND OMI steadied while being bounced around in the early stages and failed to threaten thereafter. |

Folklore
Owner:
Bob and Beverly Lewis
Breeder:
Bob and Beverly Lewis
Trainer:
D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey:
Edgar Prado

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Churchill Downs (Louisville, KY) Purchase Price: home-bred for the owners Best Known For: Crushing the field in the Grade 1Matron at Belmont. Owner: Bob and Beverly Lewis of Newport Beach, CA Breeder: Bob and Beverly Lewis Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas (143-17-20-15 Breeders’ Cup, 38-4-4-5 BC Juvenile Fillies) Regular Jockey: Edgar Prado (41-0-4-4 Breeders’ Cup, 5-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Career Highlights: - Smashing, 14-length winner of the seven-furlong, Grade 1 Matron on Sept. 17 at Belmont.
- Also a Grade 2 winner of the Adirondack at Saratoga, defeating the likes of Adieu.
- All six career starts have been in New York, including four races at Belmont to date.
- Never finished worse than second in six starts.
In the Genes: - Sire, Tiznow, is the only two-time winner of the Breeders’ Cup Classic including a memorable 2001 win over the Belmont Park surface.
- From the first crop of freshman sire Tiznow.
- Dam, Contrive, is an unraced daughter of Storm Cat.
- First foal out of the dam, Contrive.
Best Case For: - She’s done absolutely nothing wrong in six starts from five to seven furlongs and her pedigree suggests 1-1/16 miles will be no problem. Trainer D. Wayne Lukas is a four-time winner of the Juvenile Fillies. She returned to the worktab just 10 days after the Matron blowout despite traveling back to Churchill, which is a great sign. And, she’s battle-tested, with three major stakes finishes of two lengths or less on her resume.
Biggest Knock Against: - Folkore enters the Juvenile Fillies off of a 42-day layoff, and only one filly in history has won this race with a layoff more than five weeks. The good news in that corner is that Tempera was able to win the one-turn Juvenile Fillies at Belmont in 2001 on a 62-day break, so perhaps the race configuration helps Folklore’s cause.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - The last time the Breeders’ Cup was held at Belmont Park in 2001, three race winners were offspring of past Breeders’ Cup champions: Tempera (by ’92 Classic winner A.P. Indy) in the Juvenile Fillies; Unbridled Elaine (by ’90 Classic winner Unbridled) in the Distaff; and Val Royal (by ’90 Mile winner Royal Academy) in the Mile.

Adieu
Owner:
Michael Tabor and Mr. and Mrs. John Magnier
Breeder:
Glencrest Farm
Trainer:
Todd Pletcher
Jockey:
John Velazquez

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Belmont Park (Elmont, NY) Purchase Price: $300,000 buy in February at the 2005 Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-Year-Old Sale. Best Known For: Winning the Grade 2 Spinaway at Saratoga. Owner: Michael Tabor and Mr. and Mrs. John Magnier Breeder: Glencrest Farm Trainer: Todd Pletcher (16-2-1-1 Breeders’ Cup, 2-0-1-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Regular Jockey: John Velazquez (47-6-4-4 Breeders’ Cup, 6-2-1-1 BC Juvenile Fillies) Career Highlights: - Surprisingly dismissed at 7-to-1 odds when rebounding to win the Grade 2 Spinaway at Saratoga Aug. 26 by one length over Folklore.
- Flattened out when fourth to Folkore in the Grade 2 Adirondack at Saratoga, suffering her first career loss while the 6-to-5 favorite.
- Defeated rival Folklore in their first showdown, winning the July 3 Astoria at Belmont.
- Debuted a wire-to-wire winner April 22 at Keeneland sprinting 4-1/2 furlongs.
In the Genes: - Sire, El Corredor, disappointed as the 4-to-1 second choice in the 2001 Sprint at Belmont when finishing 12th.
- Sire, El Corredor, won 7 of 10 starts for $727,920; made his mark as a miler in 2000, winning the G1 Cigar Mile as a 3-year-old, and was a 2-time winner of the Grade 2 Del Mar Breeders’ Cup.
- From the first crop of freshman sire El Corredor.
- Dam, Irene’s Talkin, raced just twice, winning once, in an injury-shortened career. Adieu is her first stakes winner, although she has produced a $100,000-plus earner.
Best Case For: - Adieu has beaten rival Folklore in two out of three match-ups, and the duo appears to be the strength of the east-coast ranks. She’s well-seasoned heading into the Juvenile Fillies, racing since late April and freshened with a two-month break in early summer. The Pletcher/Velazquez team speaks for itself, and Velazquez has been particularly strong in this race historically.
Biggest Knock Against: - Sire El Corredor topped out around a mile, and it remains to be seen if his offspring will want any longer distances. El Corredor is by Mr. Greeley, who excelled at six and seven furlongs. Adieu will be a third-generation Breeders’ Cup starter, but her predecessors were both in the Sprint.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - The Frizette Stakes has produced the Juvenile Fillies winner seven times, most of any prep race.

Wild Fit
Owner:
Brewer Racing Stable
Breeder:
Hannahill Farm
Trainer:
Jeff Mullins
Jockey:
Alex Solis

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Santa Anita (Arcadia, CA) Purchase Price: private purchase for the owner Best Known For: Winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante. Owner: Brewer Racing Stable (Ron “Yogi” Brewer) and Murray Smith Breeder: Hannahill Farm Trainer: Jeff Mullins (2-0-0-1 Breeders’ Cup, 0-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Regular Jockey: Alex Solis (47-3-7-4 Breeders’ Cup, 4-0-1-1 BC Juvenile Fillies) Career Highlights: - Rallied from 10th to win the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante on Aug. 27 by two lengths.
- Tasted defeat for the first time Oct. 1 when stretching out around two turns in the Grade 2 Oak Leaf, finishing a close second to Diamond Omi after a prolonged duel.
- Debuted a rallying sprint winner at Del Mar on Aug. 14, clearing off late by four lengths.
In the Genes: - Full-sister to 2005 Grade 2 San Vicente winner Fusaichi Rock Star.
- Sire, Wild Wonder, was an earner of more than $600,000, including the Grade 2 Mervyn Le Roy Handicap. He won seven stakes all between six furlongs and 1-1/16 miles and set a track record in winning the Longacres Mile.
- Dam, Grannies Feather, did not race. She has produced four foals, with two becoming graded stakes winners already Fusaichi Rock Star and Wild Fit.
Best Case For: - The Oak Leaf has been the tell-tale prep race in recent years, producing two straight Juvenile Fillies winners: Halfbridled and Sweet Catomine. Trainer Jeff Mullins has won most of the top races in Calfornia and it’s only a matter of time before a big national score comes his way. The return to a one-turn race may be the best case of all to make for a filly who looked brilliant sprinting around one turn.
Biggest Knock Against: - Wild Fit’s pedigree could be maxed out at 1-1/16 miles, and when going this distance (albeit in a more difficult two-turn test) in the Oak Leaf, she had every chance to go by Diamond Omi and just didn’t have the same pop as her sprints. Rallying sprinters often find this scenario to be true when stretching out.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - One of Florida’s most respected pinhookers (who bought and sold Monarchos as a yearling), Wild Fit’s co-owner Murray Smith bought and re-sold such 2005 promising two-year-old stars as Strong Contender, Frisco Star and the ill-fated Hollywood Juvenile Championship winner What A Song.

Along The Sea
Owner:
Buckram Oak Farm
Breeder:
Buckram Oak Farm
Trainer:
Ralph Ziadie
Jockey:
Javier Castellano

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Calder Racecourse (Miami, Fla.) Purchase Price: home-bred for the owner Best Known For: Runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Frizette. Owner: Buckram Oak Farm of Kentucky Breeder: Buckram Oak Farm Trainer: Ralph Ziadie (0-0-0-0 Breeders' Cup, 0-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fililes) Regular Jockey: Javier Castellano (1-1-0-0 Breeders' Cup, 0-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Career Highlights: - Solid second-place finish to Adieu in the one-mile Grade 1 Frizette Stakes on Oct. 8.
- No match for Folklore in the Grade 1 Matron on Sept. 17, finishing third by 14 lengths in that seven-furlong sprint.
- Despite being bumped at the start, finishing a solid third to Adieu and Folklore in Saratoga's seven-furlong Grade 2 Spinaway in her first try in New York.
- Debuted with an easy win sprinting seven furlongs at her home base of Calder on July 24, scoring by more than five lengths in a hand ride.
In the Genes: - Sire, Anees, won the 1999 Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Gulfstream Park and was named Eclipse Award Champion Two-Year-Old.
- As a stallion, Anees best known for producing 2005 Grade 2 Coolmore Lexington winner Coin Silver.
- From the second crop of Anees offspring to race.
- Dam, Russian Flight, earned just under $100,000 and was placed in the Grade 3 Shirley Jones and Grade 3 Thoroughbred Club of America sprinting. She also has produced listed stakes-placed filly Cordoba.
Best Case For: - Trainer Ralph Ziadie is a superb horseman, and no matter how good of a runner he brings to New York which only happens when he has what he believes is a star the betting public always overlooks him. She was 25-to-1 in the Spinaway and 16-to-1 in the Matron, and you can be sure she'll be a healthy, double-digit price again in the Juvenile Fillies. She's got a pedigree to win on this day and get better with distance and the value certainly will be there.
Biggest Knock Against: - She's 0-for-2 against both Folkore and Adieu, the Juvenile Fillies favorites, so she not only needs to get better, but she may need not one, but both of those gals to regress a bit on Breeders' Cup Day. She's had some history of gate problems, so keep an eye on Along the Sea's last-minute behavior.
Bet You Didn't Know: - Along the Sea will try to become a third-generation Breeders' Cup winner. Her sire, Anees, won the 1999 Juvenile and her grandsire, Unbridled, won the 1990 Classic.

Diamond Omi
Owner:
Donald Dizney
Breeder:
Barnett Enterprises
Trainer:
Bob Baffert
Jockey:
David Flores

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Santa Anita (Arcadia, Cal.) Purchase Price: $190,000 purchase at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August Yearling Sale. Best Known For: Winning the Grade 2 Oak Leaf. Owner: Donald Dizney of Windermere, Fla. Breeder: Barnett Enterprises Trainer: Bob Baffert (41-3-7-3 Breeders’ Cup, 13-1-3-2 BC Juvenile Fillies) Regular Jockey: David Flores (19-3-2-1 Breeders’ Cup, 4-1-1-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Career Highlights: - Out-fought heavily favored Wild Fit in the Grade 2 Oak Leaf to win her stakes debut Oct. 1.
- Broke her maiden in start No. 3, her first try around two turns, with a daylight victory Sept. 7 at Del Mar.
- Outsprinted in her debut at Del Mar as the favorite before improving with blinkers added in late August to finish third in maiden special weight company.
In the Genes: - Half-sister to 1996 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and Eclipse Award winner Storm Song.
- Sire, Giant’s Causeway, was a narrow runner-up in the 2001 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont to Tiznow. He was a Group 1 winner in France at 2, and earned nearly $3 million in his 3-year-old season alone with wins in the Irish Champion, Juddmonte International, Eclipse, Sussex et al.
- From the second crop of Giant’s Causeway runners to race. His first crop included such runners as brilliant French Group 1 winner Shamardal and Kentucky Derby entrant Noble Causeway. He sired four Group 1 winners in his first year.
- Dam, Hum Along, died this past March while foaling a full-brother to Diamond Omi.
- Dam, Hum Along, produced a $6.8 million yearling sale in 2000 by Storm Cat, who went to Hong Kong named The Pioneer.
Best Case For: - She’s certainly got a pedigree for this race, this day and this distance and the right trainer calling the shots. Baffert has been brilliant with young fillies and this gal is improving since getting added distance. You have to like the maturity since blinkers have been removed in her last two starts, and jockey David Flores won the last Juvenile Fillies held at Belmont aboard Tempera.
Biggest Knock Against: - The 2005 Oak Leaf was sub-standard by its usual high-level participants, drawing only seven entrants one stakes winner. The race had little or no early pace on paper and Diamond Omi was able to control things with a heady ride from David Flores three furlongs out to shoot up the rail. They came home slowly after quickening down the backside.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - Owner Donald Dizney purchased the Washington Federals of the defunct United States Football League and moved the franchise to Orlando, renaming them the Renegades and hiring now-famous ESPN football analyst Lee Corso as his coach.

Sensation
Owner:
Cobra Farm
Breeder:
Hermitage Farm
Trainer:
Stan Hough
Jockey:
Eibar Coa

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Belmont Park (Elmont, N.Y.) Purchase Price: $475,000 buy at the 2004 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Best Known For: Winning the Grade 3 Astarita Stakes at Belmont. Owner: Cobra Farm (Gary Bisantz) and Castletop Stable (Mort Topfer) of Lexington, Ky. and Austin, Texas Breeder: Hermitage Farm Trainer: Stan Hough (2-0-0-0 Breeders' Cup, 1-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Regular Jockey: Eibar Coa (4-0-0-0 Breeders' Cup, 0-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Career Highlights: - A winner in three of four starts, all in New York including two at Belmont Park.
- Won the six-furlong Grade 3 Astarita Stakes earlier this month in commanding style.
- Disappointing fourth-place effort with a wide trip in the Grade 2 Spinaway at Saratoga in August, beaten almost nine lengths by Adieu and Folklore.
- Won back-to-back starts by romping margins to open her career, sprinting in the mud at Belmont and on a fast track at Saratoga.
In the Genes: - Sire, Dixie Union, won 7 of 12 starts for $1.2 million, including three stakes at age two (Grade 2 Norfolk, Grade 3 Best Pal and Grade 3 Hollywood Juvenile Championship) and the Grade 1 Haskell and Malibu at age three.
- Sire, Dixie Union, finished fifth in the 1999 Breeders' Cup Juvenile as the second betting choice.
- From the second crop of Dixie Union offspring to race, the hot young sire already has produced Grade 2 Cotillion winner Nothing But Fun and Swynford winner Bear Character.
- Dam, Ryn (by Mr. Prospector, has produced Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile third-place finisher I've Decided.
Best Case For: - Sensation's winning time in the Astarita of 1:16-4/5 was nearly a full second faster than the colts ran in the same-day Cowdin Stakes, won by He's Got Grit. She visually looked full of herself striding out to the wire in that most recent effort and has a pedigree to be a strong middle-distance runner.
Biggest Knock Against: - In her only class test to date, she easily was handled by leading Juvenile Fillies candidates Adieu and Folklore. That Spinaway effort leaves two doubts since it also was her longest career test at seven furlongs.
Bet You Didn't Know: - Sensation's three victories have come against a total of 12 rivals, whereas she could face as many as 13 in the Juvenile Fillies alone.

She Says It Best
Owner:
Carl Bowling
Breeder:
Carl Bowling
Trainer:
Vickie Foley
Jockey:
Eddie Martin, Jr.

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Churchill Downs (Louisville, Ky.) Purchase Price: $130,000 buy at the 2005 Ocala Breeders' February Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Best Known For: Winning the Grade 2 Alcibiades at Keeneland. Owner: Carl Bowling, Vickie Foley, et al Breeder: Carl Bowling Trainer: Vickie Foley (1-0-0-0 Breeders' Cup, 1-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Regular Jockey: Eddie Martin, Jr. (1-0-0-0 Breeders' Cup, 0-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Career Highlights: - Wire-to-wire of the Oct. 7 Grade 2 Alcibiades Stakes at Keeneland, her first graded stakes victory in career start No. 6.
- Blowout winner of the Ellis Park Debutante sprinting seven furlongs this summer, a race she followed with a hard-fought, runner-up placing in the Bassinet Stakes at River Downs, losing by a head.
- Kentucky-based runner has raced in her home state in five of six starts, debuting at Churchill Downs in June.
In the Genes: - Sire Stormy Atlantic, won 6 of 15 starts for $148,126, racing only twice until his four-year-old season in 1998. That year, he was a two-time minor sprint stakes winner in Maryland and Delaware. Sire is a son of Storm Cat out of SA Oaks winner Hail Atlantis.
- Sire, Stormy Atlantic, best known for producing graded stakes winning filly Atlantic Ocean and multiple stakes-winning sprinter Gators N Bears.
- Dam, Bestsayes, never raced. She also has produced two minor Florida listed stakes winners, Say Dance and Whitney's Best.
Best Case For: - She's shown the flat-out speed to win sprinting 4-1/2 furlongs from the rail, while also being able to win a two-turn route race from the outside post No. 9. Obviously, she's naturally gifted with early speed, and the cut back to a one-turn race at Belmont versus the two-turn affair at Keeneland only helps her chances of another upset run.
Biggest Knock Against: - This year's Aclbiades was not up to its historical snuff, if you will, with nary a single graded stakes winner in the starting gate. She Says It Best's closest pursuer, Ex Caelis, was previously soundly defeated in the Arlington-Washington Lassie by Original Spin, who figures to be a big price in the Juvenile Fillies. As we head to Belmont, the jury is out on what She Says It Best has defeated in her career.
Bet You Didn't Know: - In the three previous Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies held at Belmont Park, twice the Alcibiades winner has finished second on the big day 1990 Private Treasure (26-to-1) and 1995 Cara Rafaela (9-to-2).

Breeder:
Charles Nuckols Jr. and Sons
Trainer:

Jockey:
TBD

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Hawthorne Racecourse (Chicago, Ill.) Purchase Price: private transaction. Best Known For: Winning the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie. Owner: Russell L. Reineman Stables of Chicago, Ill. Breeder: Charles Nuckols Jr. and Sons Trainer: Tony Mitchell (0-0-0-0 Breeders’ Cup, 0-0-0-0 BC Juvenile Fillies) Regular Jockey: tbd Career Highlights: - Perfect 2-for-2 record in her career.
- Rallied from mid-pack to score a convincing, 4-1/4 length victory Sept. 18 in the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Lassie at one mile.
- Debuted a smart winner Aug. 13 at Arlington sprinting six furlongs in 1:10-4/5. Scored from the outside post 10 while racing wide.
In the Genes: - Sire, Distorted Humor, best known for producing 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner Funny Cide. He’s also produced Grade 1 Clement Hirsch winner Fourty Niners Son and Grade 1 Travers winner Flower Alley in 2005 alone.
- Sire, Distorted Humor, won 8 of 23 starts for $769,964, but did not race at two. He was a graded stakes winner at four and give, topped by the Grade 2 Commonwealth Breeders’ Cup and Churchill Downs Handicap.
- Dam, We Love Granny, produced 2004 juvenile stakes-winning Illinois-bred Humor At Last (a full brother to Original Spin), third in this spring’s Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn and runner-up in the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Sprint.
- Dam, We Love Granny, won 1 of 8 starts. She carried twins in 2001, but slipped.
Best Case For: - Her final times have been outstanding in both career starts, six furlongs in 1:10-4/5 and a one-turn mile in 1:35-4/5. She looks the part of a talented young filly and trainer Tony Mitchell has had great success in recent years with young Illinois-breds.
Biggest Knock Against: - Original Spin is lightly raced and untested against top competition. She has yet to travel for a race, and it’s always a question mark to see if inexperienced horses can handle new environments big crowds, a detention barn a different racing surface.
Bet You Didn’t Know: - Every Juvenile Fillies winner in history has made three or more prior starts.

Ex Caelis
Owner:
Circle C Racing Group
Breeder:
Barnett Enterprises
Trainer:
D. Wayne Lukas
Jockey:
Gary Stevens

Division: Juvenile Fillies Home Base: Churchill Downs (Louisville, Ky.) Purchase Price: private purchase by the owner after being bought back for $470,000 as a yearling. - Scored a two-length win in her second lifetime start Aug. 21 at Saratoga sprinting seven furlongs.
- Debuted third at Saratoga on July 31, closing well despite a wide trip going six furlongs.
In the Genes: - From the second crop of red-hot sire, Fusaichi Pegasus, the 2000 Kentucky Derby and Wood Memorial winner, who finished his career in the Breeders' Cup Classic sixth as the favorite.
- Fusaichi Pegasus already has produced the likes of Roman Ruler, Bandini, Andromeda's Hero et al.
- Dam, La Barberina (by Niinksy II), never won in French racing career, but is half-sister to Grade 1 winner Fantastic Look and three other stakes winners in the US and Ireland.
Best Case For: - Filly has a wonderful pedigree for the distance and a trainer ever-so-capable of winning Breeders' Cup races with the youngsters. She's been compromised by bad post draws, wide trips, rough starts et al in her career and with open sailing could be any kind.
Biggest Knock Against: - Speed-figure advocates will note she's never run a big number, while class proponents will notice she's avoided the heavyweights in New York, including stablemate Folklore the likely Juvenile Fillies favorite.
Bet You Didn't Know: - Ex Caelis means "from the heavens" in Latin.
