Round Pond wins one for Matz
By David Grening
Daily Racing Form, November 04, 2006
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Michael Matz's world came full circle Saturday afternoon at Churchill Downs.
Five months ago, in the Preakness, Matz watched his Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro pull up with a life-threatening injury as the favorite in the Preakness while Bernardini galloped to a rousing 5 1/4-length victory. Saturday, in the $2,070,160 Breeders' Cup Distaff, the Matz-trained Round Pond galloped to a 4 1/4-length victory while the two favorites in the race suffered injuries.
In the case of Pine Island, the leading 3-year-old filly in the country and the 5-2 second choice, she suffered a dislocation of the fetlock joint in her left foreleg and had to be euthanized. In the case of Fleet Indian, the leading older mare in the country and the slight 5-2 Distaff favorite, she suffered injuries to the suspensory ligament in her left front fetlock joint, but, according to Dr. Wayne McIlwraith, the injury is repairable.

| Race Comments: ROUND POND was unhurried for five furlongs, worked her way forward along the inside on the turn, awaited room while moving between horses approaching the quarter pole, checked slightly then angled to the rail at the top of the stretch, got through along the inside to take the lead in upper stretch then drew away under steady right hand urging. ASI SIEMPRE steadied in tight on the first turn, raced in traffic along the backstretch, raced well back for five furlongs, worked her way forward along the inside on the turn, was blocked behind a wall of horses while gaining in upper stretch, steadied in traffic in midstretch, moved to the outside while looking for room a furlong out, bothered BALLETTO while splitting horses in midstretch then rallied belatedly to gain the place. Following a stewards inquiry into the stretch run along with a claim of foul lodged by the rider of BALLETTO, ASI SIEMPRE was disqualified from second and place fourth for interference in the stretch. HAPPY TICKET was reserved for six furlongs, launched a rally from outside on the far turn, circled five wide while gaining at the top of the stretch, made a run to challenge in midstretch then weakened late. BALLETTO (UAE) was outrun along the backstretch, raced well back to the turn, advanced six wide into the stretch, closed the gap to reach contention in upper stretch, steadied while being bothered in midstretch then closed late from outside. LEMONS FOREVER raced far back for seven furlongs, lodged a rally five wide on the turn and rallied belatedly. SHARP LISA pressed the pace between horses along the backstretch, moved between horses to threaten on the turn, gained a brief lead nearing the quarter pole and steadily tired thereafter. BAGHDARIA raced just off the pace while three wide for a half, launched a bid from outside to reach contention in upper stretch and flattened out. SPUN SUGAR checked in traffic on the first turn, saved ground along the backstretch then lacked the needed response when called upon. POOL LAND pressed the early pace while three wide, opened a clear advantage on the far turn, battled to the top of the stretch and steadily tired thereafter. HOLLYWOOD STORY never reached contention after breaking slowly. BUSHFIRE raced up close early, chased the leaders from outside along the backstretch, raced within striking distance to the far turn and steadily tired thereafter. HEALTHY ADDICTION set the pace along the rail to the turn and gave way. FLEET INDIAN steadied on the first turn, raced well back, was pulled up on the turn and was vanned off. PINE ISLAND broke down and fell entering the backstretch and was vanned off. |
