Ouija Board notches second F&M Turf win
By Marcus Hersh   Daily Racing Form, November 04, 2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ouija Board staked her claim as one of the great racehorses in the 23-year history of the Breeders' Cup, winning the Filly and Mare Turf for the second time in three years, with a second-place finish last season sandwiched between triumphs in 2004 and this year.

Just as she did in 2004 at Lone Star Park, Ouija Board beat tough-luck Film Maker - a bridesmaid yet again - to take home the $1,188,000 winner's share of a $2.2 million purse. Beaten 2 1/2 lengths by Ouija Board, Film Maker was a neck better than Honey Ryder, with Wait a While, the strong second choice, coming home fourth. Satwa Queen was fifth, and five longshots rounded out the order of finish. Ouija Board, who paid $4.80 as the favorite, was timed in 2:14.55 for 1 3/8 miles on firm turf. A daughter of Cape Cross out of the mare Selection Board, Ouija Board won the seventh Grade or Group 1 race of her career, and has earned almost $5.7 million.

Race Comments: OUIJA BOARD (GB), never far back and rating kindly between rivals three or four wide, continued covered up while racing in the three path entering the backstretch, advanced between rivals in workmanlike fashion around the far turn, secured room at the quarter-mile ground when angled five or six wide, gained command when lightly roused approaching the final furlong, then concluded under energetic hand urging. FILM MAKER, well placed while in hand three or four wide, moved with OUIJA BOARD while inside that one on the far turn, was between horses entering the stretch, angled to the hedge and gamely earned the place. HONEY RYDER settled near the inside early, was put to a drive between foes entering the far turn, worked her way outside the winner to be seven wide for the final furlong and managed a mild gain. WAIT A WHILE tracked the pace four wide into the upper stretch, remained a factor into the final furlong and came up empty. SATWA QUEEN (FR), sluggish to begin, raced four or five wide most of the way, was asked for her best entering the upper stretch and failed to respond. MY TYPHOON (IRE) maneuvered in early to press front-running DANCING EDIE in hand, moved to the front upon going six furlongs, inched to a clear advantage in the upper stretch but faltered. MAURALAKANA (FR), steadied alongside the winner during the early going, settled near the inside, raced in hand, maneuvered out five wide entering the stretch but lacked a response. DANCING EDIE moved to the fore inside early, showed the way for six furlongs while pressured by MY TYPHOON (IRE), surrendered the advantage to that one and weakened. QUIET ROYAL, five wide much of the way, lost a bit of position on the far turn, fanned wider entering the stretch and was finished. GERMANCE broke a bit awkwardly, was angled to the inside early, steadied after a furlong while in behind foes, worked her way forward after a quarter, continued near the inside, was asked for her best three furlongs out and couldn't respond.
