Pace sets up winning rally for Red Rocks
By Marty McGee
Daily Racing Form, November 04, 2006
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Red Rocks gave jockey Frankie Dettori his third victory in the Breeders' Cup Turf when he gamely held off Better Talk Now in the final furlong to win Saturday in the $3 million Turf at Churchill Downs.
After getting a clean trip from far off a solid pace set by longshot Icy Atlantic, Red Rocks circled the field and launched his bid leaving the backstretch, and he was able to finish a half-length clear of Better Talk Now. English Channel, the 7-2 second choice, finished third, another 2 1/4 lengths ahead of Rush Bay in a field of 11.
Red Rocks, owned by J. Paul Reddam and based in Ireland with trainer Brian Meehan, returned $23.60 as fifth choice after finishing 1 1/2 miles in 2:27.32 over a course rated firm.

| Race Comments: RED ROCKS (IRE), reserved at once and three or four wide, moved a bit wider for the run along the backstretch, continued off the inside and maneuvered six wide into the stretch, reached the front leaving the furlong grounds, then was hard ridden to hold BETTER TALK NOW safe. BETTER TALK NOW, taken in hand early and positioned three wide, remained near the inside until the final quarter, came out seven wide for the drive and couldn't reach the winner as clearly second best. ENGLISH CHANNEL tracked the pace from early on while four or five wide, inched to a slight advantage in the upper stretch, then weakened in the late going. RUSH BAY tracked front-running ICY ATLANTIC from the outset three or four wide, took over soon after going a mile, made the pace into the upper stretch and faltered. SCORPION (IRE), well placed near the inside from the outset, battled forwardly two or three wide into the upper stretch and couldn't keep pace. HURRICANE RUN (IRE) settled between foes three or four wide early, moved inside after a half, came out again to race four wide on the final turn, swung eight wide into the stretch but lacked a closing account. GO DEPUTY, forwardly positioned early, raced within easy striking distance while between foes entering the far turn and lacked a closing account. T. H. APPROVAL, unhurried early and near the inside, made a mild move on the far turn while remaining inside and failed to continue. SILVERFOOT settled three wide, was outrun to the lane, came out seven wide for the drive and passed tired foes. CACIQUE (IRE) followed the leaders in a striking position five wide, remained a factor to the head of the stretch and tired. ICY ATLANTIC stepped right to the front and quickly opened a clear advantage along the inside, showed the way for a bit more than a mile, surrendered the advantage to RUSH BAY, faded soon after and wasn't abused in the drive. |
