Miesque's Approval roars home
By David Grening   Daily Racing Form, November 04, 2006

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A year after he couldn't win a $50,000 claiming race at Aqueduct, Miesque's Approval beat some of the best turf horses in the world in Saturday's $2.17 million Cup Mile at Churchill Downs.

Having one horse beaten after the opening half-mile, Miesque's Approval came with a thunderous late kick while eight wide in the stretch to win the Mile by 2 3/4 lengths. Aragorn, whose connections said wasn't handling the firm turf course, won a multiple-horse photo for second by a head over Badge of Silver. It was a neck back to Sleeping Indian in fourth.

Araafa, the 3-1 favorite, finished ninth.

Race Comments: MIESQUE'S APPROVAL, reserved early and eased back four or five wide, was patiently handled, advanced five wide on the far turn, fanned out seven or eight wide when straightened into the stretch, then responded to strong right-handed urging to move well clear. ARAGORN (IRE) brushed the side of the gate at the break, settled under light restraint between foes, worked his way out five wide to secure room on the backstretch, was with MIESQUE'S APPROVAL while immediately inside that one in the upper stretch and wasn't a match in the late going while determinedly earning the place position. BADGE OF SILVER moved up soon after the start to press front-running SILENT NAME (JPN) three or four wide, gained near even terms for the lead at the furlong grounds but couldn't sustain the needed momentum. SLEEPING INDIAN (GB) exchanged bumps with ARAAFA (IRE) at the start, settled near the inside, continued near the hedge around the far turn, worked his way out nine wide leaving the eighth pole and finished willingly. ROB ROY was unprepared at the start to immediately trail, angled near the inside, was unhurried while outrun to the far turn, circled horses ten wide in the upper stretch and was gaining late. SILENT NAME (JPN) bobbled slightly at the break, moved to the front near the inside, opened a clear advantage on the first turn, went along under careful handling, held on well into the final furlong and weakened. GORELLA (FR), a bit sluggish to begin, was steadied four wide approaching the first turn, continued three or four wide while unhurried, maneuvered out eight wide when straightened for the drive, reached contention at the furlong grounds but failed to continue. AUSSIE RULES, five wide and between rivals much of the trip, failed to rally. ARAAFA (IRE) exchanged bumps with SLEEPING INDIAN (GB) at the start, raced within easy striking distance while between foes three or four wide into the upper stretch and flattened out. LIBRETTIST, unhurried early, worked his way to the inside on the backstretch, inched closer on the far turn, remained a factor to the upper stretch and weakened. FREE THINKING, nicely positioned while tracking the pace from between foes three or four wide, remained a factor to the three-sixteenths pole and faltered. SUPER FROLIC tired on the far turn. AD VALOREM, forwardly placed along the inside, was asked for more about the five-sixteenths pole and failed to respond. ECHO OF LIGHT (GB) tracked the pace four or five wide to the head of the stretch and weakened soon after.
