Thor's Echo dominates Sprint field
By Mike Welsch
Daily Racing Form, November 04, 2006
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Trainer Doug O'Neill and owners Pablo Suarez and Royce Jaime were hanging their heads a bit after Thor's Echo drew post position 1 for Saturday's $2,130,000 Breeders' Cup Sprint. But in the end, the seemingly unlucky draw proved to be a blessing in disguise and helped propel the California invader Thor's Echo to a convincing four-length victory over 58-1 longshot Friendly Island in the six-furlong Sprint.
Under a beautifully judged ride by jockey Corey Nakatani, Thor's Echo saved ground while chasing embattled leaders Bordonaro and Attila's Storm down the backstretch, angled out three wide before eventually wresting control at the top of the stretch, then drew off with complete authority. Friendly Island also benefited from his inside post, saving ground into the stretch before easing out and outfinishing fellow longshot Nightmare Affair by a half-length for second.

| Race Comments: THOR'S ECHO rated just off the early pace along the inside, moved out along the backstretch, edged closer while three wide on the turn, surged to the front nearing the quarter pole, shook loose to gain a clear lead in upper stretch then drew away under steady right hand urging through the final eighth. FRIENDLY ISLAND settled in good position through the opening quarter, launched a rally along the inside on the far turn, gradually gained while saving ground on the turn, angled out a bit in upper stretch and finished willingly to best the others. NIGHTMARE AFFAIR raced in the middle of the pack while in traffic along the backstretch, worked his way forward three wide on the turn, swung out in upper stretch and rallied belatedly to gain a share. BORDONARO rushed up along the rail to contest the early pace, alternated for the lead along the inside to the top of the stretch, yielded to the winner in upper stretch and weakened from his early efforts. ATTILA'S STORM sprinted to the front soon after the start, set or forced the pace from outside into upper stretch, remained a factor into midstretch and steadily tired thereafter. TOO MUCH BLING steadied in traffic along the backstretch, angled in a bit on the turn, raced well back to the top of the stretch and failed to threaten with a mild late rally. WAR FRONT raced up close from outside in the early stages, stalked four wide to the far turn, dropped back steadily on the turn and failed to threaten thereafter. SIREN LURE was shuffled back slightly in the early stages, raced wide while far back to the turn, circled eighth wide into the stretch and failed to menace with a mild late rally. POMEROY raced up close early, steadied and clipped heels at the five-eighths pole, dropped back on the far turn and steadily tired thereafter. KELLY'S LANDING failed to mount a serious rally while five wide throughout. LEWIS MICHAEL was bumped in tight at the start, steadied repeatedly in traffic in the early stages then angled out along the backstretch and failed to menace thereafter. MALIBU MINT failed to mount a serious rally while very wide throughout. AREYOUTALKINTOME steadied after being pinched back leaving the gate and failed to menace thereafter. HENNY HUGHES stumbled at the start, was caught in traffic early, angled in on the far turn and lacked a late response. |
