Street Sense wins Juvenile by record 10
By Jay Privman
Daily Racing Form, November 04, 2006
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - It took Street Sense only 1:42.59 to win the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Saturday at Churchill Downs, but it took less time than that for his trainer, Carl Nafzger, to put the first Saturday in November behind him and start looking at the first Saturday in May.
"We want to come back the first Saturday in May," Nafzger said, referring to the Kentucky Derby, run at the same track exactly six months from now. "That's when we want to be here."
Street Sense ($32.40) won the 1 1/16-mile race like a colt who could finally end the inglorious record of Juvenile winners who have never won the 1 1/4-mile Derby. Street Sense made a mockery of what appeared to be a wide-open race. He won by 10 lengths, a record margin in the Juvenile and the second-biggest in Breeders' Cup history behind the 13 1/2-length margin by which Inside Information captured the 1995 Distaff.

| Race Comments: STREET SENSE was unhurried while racing well back for six furlongs, checked slightly while launching his bid midway on the turn, came around PRINCIPLE SECRET and angled right back to the rail on the turn, rapidly gained nearing the quarter pole, slipped through along the fence in upper stretch, charged to the front opening a commanding lead in midstretch, then drew off with authority under intermittent right hand urging with the rider glancing back a bit in the late stages. CIRCULAR QUAY steadied and was pinched back at the start, raced far back while between horses for five furlongs, closed the gap leaving the backstretch, moved out leaving the three-eighths pole, swung five wide entering the stretch then finished willingly while lugging in through the stretch to clearly best the others. GREAT HUNTER steadied in tight at the start, checked sharply while being bounced around on the first turn, raced well back for a half while between horses, checked in traffic while gaining midway on the turn, swung four wide while gaining at the quarter pole, made a move to gain a brief lead in upper stretch, yielded to the winner in upper stretch then weakened under pressure in the final eighth. SCAT DADDY steadied in tight along the inside on the first turn, moved out entering the backstretch, stalked the leaders while four wide for six furlongs, lodged a mild bid from outside to threaten on the turn, battled into upper stretch and gradually tired thereafter. STORMELLO moved up along the rail to contest the early pace, dueled heads apart along the inside for six furlongs, battled heads apart for the lead at the top of the stretch and tired from his early efforts. C P WEST steadied in tight at the start, raced in traffic while shuffled back a bit on the first turn, was unhurried for a half, closed the gap to reach contention on the turn and flattened out. U D GHETTO stumbled at the start, checked slightly while being bothered on the first turn, raced far back while five wide to the turn and failed to threaten while improving his position. KING OF THE ROXY steadied sharply in traffic on the first turn, raced four wide in midpack for six furlongs and lacked a further response. SKIP CODE bothered while carried five wide on the first turn, was never a factor. TEUFLESBERG steadied sharply after being bumped hard on the first turn, was never a factor while five wide. PEGASUS WIND dueled three wide to the turn and gave way. MALT MAGIC stumbled at the start, raced up close while five wide for most of the way and faded on the turn. GOT THE LAST LAUGH raced up close while wide for five furlongs and faded. PRINCIPLE SECRET steadied after giving way on the turn and was eased late. |
