Dreaming of Anna bolts from rail

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Outspoken owner Frank Calabrese is rarely at a loss for words. But immediately after winning the $2 million Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with Dreaming of Anna, a filly he named after his late sister, Anna Andersen, he was left speechless.
So were observers, who witnessed Dreaming of Anna, a Rahy filly, cap a 4-for-5 season with an emphatic 1 1/2-length victory over Octave in the Juvenile Fillies. Her victory virtually assures she will be voted North America's champion 2-year-old filly.
Although the Juvenile Fillies appeared well matched on paper, Dreaming of Anna was in control throughout. Breaking sharply from the rail, she quickly shot to the lead under jockey Rene Douglas and got away with surprisingly easy early fractions.

Race Comments: DREAMING OF ANNA allowed to drift out four wide entering the first turn when moving to the lead, set the pace after angling in to race near the inside, repulsed a bid by APPEALING ZONE on the second turn, responded willingly when challenged by the runner-up in midstretch and edged clear late. OCTAVE close up along the inside, steadied behind the winner entering the second turn, recovered, angled out a bit for the drive, made a run at the winner with a furlong to go, could not stay with that one late but held on gamely for the place. COTTON BLOSSOM four wide early when forwardly placed, maintained her position around the second turn, came out five wide into the stretch but lacked a closing bid. APPEALING ZOPHIE pressed the pace outside DREAMING OF ANNA while reserved, made an earnest bid midway through the second turn, stayed on well to midstretch and weakened. CASH INCLUDED within striking distance along the inside, continued along the inside on the second turn, held on well to the stretch and weakened. SHE'S INCLUDED forwardly placed between rivals, maintained good position to the stretch and gave way. ADHRHYTHM angled in early, steadied behind rivals entering the first turn, was reserved for a half and could not menace. BEL AIR BEAUTY unhurried early, made a mild three wide middle move but could not sustain the bid. SUTRA unhurried early along the inside, saved ground on the second turn and could not threaten. QUICK LITTLE MISS five wide on the first turn, dropped back before a half, raced in the four path on the second turn and was no factor. SATULAGI hopped a bit at the start, recovered, clipped HER MAJESTY's heels once in the first turn, was unhurried and could not threaten. GATORIZE drifted out at the start, raced five wide on first turn and could not menace. HER MAJESTY four wide early, raced in traffic down the backstretch and into the second turn and was outrun. LILLY CARSON close up early five wide, held on well for a half and stopped. |
