Todd Pletcher
Todd Pletcher has won four Eclipse Award training titles. He operates one of the largest stables in North America, and routinely is among the top trainers in the country in money and stakes won. Pletcher has trained champions, Ashado, English Channel, Fleet Indian, Lawyer Ron, Rags to Riches, Speightstown, and Wait a While. Rags to Riches became the first filly in 102 years to win the Belmont Stakes in 2007 when she narrowly defeated eventual two-time Horse of the Year Curlin.

Pletcher will start Dunkirk, who is owned by Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, and Derrick Smith in the 2009 Belmont Stakes. The $3.7 million yearling has won two of four starts, and was second in the Florida Derby and 11th in the Kentucky Derby. Pletcher shares his thoughts as he prepares Dunkirk for the 140th running of the Belmont Stakes on June 6 with author and racing journalist Karen M. Johnson. In upcoming blogs, Pletcher will discuss his magical moment with Rags to Riches two years ago, and assess his chances with Dunkirk in this year’s running.

    MORE FROM TODD PLETCHER...
    June 4:  I'm Optimistic

    I'm Optimistic

Todd Pletcher, Dunkirk's trainer, shares his thoughts on race strategy for Saturday's $1 million Belmont Stakes, his superstitions, and Dunkirk's demeanor.

    I don't think there is a particularly good or bad post (with a 10-horse field going 1 1⁄2-miles – Dunkirk drew post 2). It's a non-issue, basically.

I think Charitable Man is the most likely pacesetter, possibly also Miner's Escape. Depending on how aggressively they go up front, I would like to see Dunkirk get in a situation where he can get in his rhythm. I probably anticipate he will be a little closer to the pace because it is going to be a slower pace.

I won't really give (John Velazquez) instructions. We'll talk some strategy in terms of what the possible pace scenarios are. Obviously, he knows who the horses are that he needs to keep on eye on.  There won't be a whole lot of strategy talk, though.

Dunkirk isn't one of the horses that gallops alone to the starting gate (a method Pletcher sometimes utilizes to give a horse a brisk warming-up away from the lead pony on the way to the starting gate). He goes with a pony every day when he trains. He occasionally will see something that will spook him. I don't want him to take a journey around Belmont Park before the race.

He's really a pretty laid-back horse most of the time. Like I said, we take him with the pony to and from the track, so he has a companion. He's not what I would describe as a mean horse, but if you walk up to his stall, he might reach out and give you a nibble.

I'm looking for the same thing as everyone else is: A neutral and fair surface. Not speed-favoring or closer-favoring; just a good honest and safe track.

I'm optimistic. I'm not one to make bold projections, but I do think Dunkirk will run well.

I have four horses running before the Belmont is run. Munnings (Woody Stephens, eighth race) and Cowboy Cal (Manhattan, 10th race) are doing very really well. They are, of course, both extremel y tough races. I have this filly from South Africa in the Just a Game (seventh race), Captain's Lover, and she has been training very well. Allrightsreserved, a maiden, is also running (third race). They are all very live  . . . but are running in competitive races.

I do have a few superstitions, but wearing a lucky suit is not one of them. Generally, I don't like 50-dollar bills and black cats.

One more thing!!! Congratulations on Munnings win! Dunkirk and Munnings, two incredibly expensive colts, representing wealth and success- nothing to be ashamed of in America. I love it when expensive horses live up to their promise! Your getting closer, a Todd Pletcher Triple Crown is still in the future!

I was proud of both you and Dunkirk as he lead the way and held on for 2nd! Unbridled's Song no Belmont distance? Not if Secret Status had her way! I cannot wait to see what he will do for the rest of the year! And thank you for the heads up on the other horses running. YOU CAN HELP ADVERTISE RACING BETTER, AND YOUR OWN STABLE AND TRAINING AS WELL, BY GIVING MORE DETAILS AND PERSONALITY TO YOUR HORSES WITH BIOS ON YOUR SITE- No downside, obviously keep your privacy regarding your horses to some extent, but the little stuff - like Dunkirk being ready to take a chomp out of you - that's stuff us fans want to know. Bringing the horses to life on your site is just good free advertising. And I hope that both you and Garrett keep up the blogs here at NTRA. Thank You!

Dunkirk is special. He ran a spectacular race in the Belmont fighting back after MTB passed him. I hope to see more of him this year. That poor horse never has a good pace setup. Anyway, I hope to see him win some big races soon!

I absolutely loved Dunkirk today! Awesome effort! I heard that he tied up though... Is that the case?

I think you have a winner Todd and I will put my money where my mouth is. I'm actually looking for Dunkirk to crush the field in this spot! Good Luck
