Derby film gets boost from Churchill

Marty McGee, Daily Racing Form

Churchill Downs Inc. is helping to sponsor the distribution of the independent film "The First Saturday in May" into major markets throughout the United States next month in the lead-up to the 134th Kentucky Derby.

Produced by brothers John and Brad Hennegan, the film follows six trainers during the period leading to the 2006 Derby, won by Barbaro. The film will be distributed in 15 U.S. markets, including New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, during the week of April 18-24, and in three other major markets the following week.

"The First Saturday in May" has been critically acclaimed since it was first released last year.

"Our goal was to make horse racing cool again by telling the stories of the hardworking, dedicated, and resilient individuals who dedicate their lives to the horses they love," John Hennegan said in a Churchill release.

A trailer for the movie and more information are available at www.thefirstsaturdayinmay.com.
