Oxbow came into the 2013 season ready to hit the Triple Crown trail with a win in the LeComte Stakes (G3), winning by 11 1/2 lengths. However, the colt ran into bad luck in the Risen Star Stakes (G2) when he finished fourth in a blanket finish before finishing a close second to stablemate Will Take Charge in the Rebel Stakes (G2). However, even with a non-points fifth place finish in the Arkansas Derby (G1), Oxbow secured himself a spot in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
After a sixth place finish in the Kentucky Derby, Oxbow came back to win the 2013 Preakness Stakes. The win was the first classic victory for Calumet Farm since 1968 and also allowed trainer D. Wayne Lukas to become the winningest trainer of U.S. classics with 14. The colt proved his Preakness success wasn't a fluke when he finished second to Palace Malice in the 2013 Belmont Stakes.
Oxbow is trained by D. Wayne Lukas and was purchased by Bluegrass Hall (now Calumet Farm) for $250,000 at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in 2011. He is out of a full sister to two-time Breeders' Cup Classic winner Tiznow and is closely related to Travers winner Paynter.
