Bred: Frank Jones (KY)
Dam: Flying Marlin, by Marlin
Tapitsfly is the winner of the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. The gray or roan 5-year-old daughter of Tapit out of the Marlin mare Flying Marlin didn’t become a graded stakes winner until she captured the Grade 2 Honey Fox Stakes at Gulfstream Park in March 2012.
After her victory in the Honey Fox, trainer Dale Romans said that even though she had suffered some tough defeats, it was still hard to believe that the Frank Jones Jr. homebred had only just notched her first graded stakes win. Her luck must have been changing because she notched her second graded stakes win in June, going wire to wire in the Grade 1 Just a Game Stakes at Belmont at a mile on the turf. In October 2012, Tapitsfly struck again in Grade 1 company when she won the First Lady Stakes (G1) at Keeneland.
Jockey Robbie Albarado, who rode her in the Breeders’ Cup, called her a “little fighter” afterward because she battled second-place finisher Rose Catherine on the front end for the entire mile before sticking her head in front near the finish line. She proved to be exactly that as she has come back from surgery to remove bone chips in her ankle that forced her to the sidelines for 14 months after her juvenile campaign.
Tapitsfly broke her maiden at Saratoga in August 2009 and in her next start won the PG Johnson Stakes at the Spa. She is the third foal out of Flying Marlin and is the broodmare’s first winner.
