In the fourth start of his career, The Lumber Guy captured the $200,000 Grade 2 Jerome Stakes in front-running fashion for owner Barry Schwartz and trainer Mike Hushion. After showing speed and fading in the 1 1/8-mile Grade 1 Wood Memorial Stakes on April 7, 2012, The Lumber Guy seemed to find the shorter one-mile Jerome more to his liking.

The Lumber Guy showed his versatility with a convincing victory in the six-furlong Grade 1 Vosburgh Stakes in September 2012 that earned him an automatic starting spot in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Sprint.

The Lumber Guy finished second in the 2012 Breeders' Cup Sprint to cement his credentials as an elite sprinter.

In 2013, The Lumber Guy finished second in a stakes race at Saratoga in his best performance of the year.
