Although considered the best 3-year-old sprinter in the country and having never raced beyond seven furlongs, Trinniberg started in the Kentucky Derby for his connections, the Parboo family. Trained by patriarch, Bisnath Parboo, and owned by his son, Shivananda Parboo, Trinniberg was prominent early in the Derby before fading to finish 17th.

Trinniberg entered the Run for the Roses off of back-to-back victories in the Grade 3 Swale and Bay Shore Stakes. He took the former by six lengths and won the latter by three.

Returned to sprinting later in 2012, Trinniberg responded with victories in the Grade 2 Woody Stephens Stakes and the Breeders' Cup Sprint. Trinniberg was named 2012 champion sprinter at the Eclipse Awards in January 2013.

The Parboos purchased the colt for $21,000 from M & H Training and Sales, agent, at the 2011 Ocala Breeders' Sales Co. spring two-year-olds in training sale.

J M Stables bred Trinniberg in Kentucky. He is out of the winning Goldminers Gold mare Bella Dorato, who finished second in the 2005 Finger Lakes Juvenile Fillies Stakes.

Trinniberg struggled to recapture his elite form in 2013 with his best race in four starts a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Smile Sprint Handicap in July at Calder.
