Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps leads the distinguished stable, whose roots are in Wheatley Stable started in 1926 by his grandmother, Mrs. Henry Carnegie Phipps. His father, Ogden, was a prominent owner and breeder, who raced in his own name.
Dinny Phipps’ great-grandfather, Henry Phipps, was a childhood friend and business partner of Andrew Carnegie, and they made their fortunes together in the iron and steel business in the 19th Century. Mrs. Phipps was the driving force behind Wheatley Stable until her death in 1970. Her top horse was Bold Ruler, talented on the track and later a prominent stallion and sire of Secretariat.
Ogden Phipps owned nine national or Eclipse Award champions, including Buckpasser, Easy Goer and Personal Ensign. As Ogden Phipps approached his late 80s, he wanted to make sure that his family continued it tradition in racing and began breeding in the name of Phipps Stable. The stable is now owned by Dinny Phipps and his children. Daisy Phipps Pulito now assists her father with its management. The stable’s long list of top horses includes Rhythm, Inside Information, Smuggler and Storm Flag Flying. Phipps stable ranked 11th in 2012 for owner earnings.
The most recent star for Phipps Stable is Orb, a bay colt by Malibu Moon. Orb sets his sights on the 2013 Kentucky Derby, going into the race tied for first on the points leaderboard with 150 points after his Florida Derby victory at Gulfstream.
