Hushion was born in New York City, but discovered horse racing while majoring in economics at the University of Oklahoma. He left school after three years to pursue a career in the sport and received his racing education during a five-year tour as a groom and assistant for the legendary Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens. Hushion opened his own stable in 1975 and won a pair of Aqueduct training titles during the winter of 1992-93. He has been the main trainer for owner Barry K. Schwartz since 1991. Hushion trained the popular Boom Towner, a gelding who retired in 1998 at the age of 10, for the majority of his successful career. Boom Towner was 29-16-13 from 82 starts with earnings of $961,290. He won the Boojum, Sport Page and Toboggan handicaps in New York. Other stakes winners Hushion has conditioned include Bedside Manner, Blare of Trumpets, Fire King, Seeking the Sky and Turnofthecentury.
