Richard Grose Sits Atop Leaderboard After Day 1 of the NHC

Richard Grose, a 56-year-old CEO of an asphalt company in St. Louis, recorded a score of $235.60 to lead the 455-player field following Day One of the $1.5 million Daily Racing Form/NTRA National Handicapping Championship (NHC) Presented by Treasure Island and Sovereign Stable. Grose—playing in his 8th NHC—earned mythical contest money on six of his 15 plays, including a “Best Bet” tally worth $76.80 when he selected Grande Chica ($29.00 to win, $9.40 to place) in the 3rd race at Gulfstream Park. For finishing first on Day One, Grose earned a Day One bonus of $5,000.

Jim Benes finished second with $169.00 and earned a $4,000 Day One cash bonus. David Gutfreund ($166.00) was third, good for $3,000; Tim Darnell ($155.00) checked in fourth and earned a bonus of $2,000. In fifth was Dan Flanigan ($153.60) who received $1,000.

The 14th annual NHC resumes tomorrow for the final day of the two-day competition, which carries a grand prize of $750,000.
