DAILY RACING FORM / NTRA PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Name: Joseph Perry
Resides: Hamilton, NJ
Favorite Track: Monmouth Park wins in a tight photo over Delaware Park
Favorite Wager: Win
Qualifying Site: Monmouth Park
How did you first get into horse racing? My dad would go to the racetrack every Saturday. One day, when I was eight years old, I asked if I could go with him. He agreed, but said that I would have to wait until the summer when Delaware Park was open since they were the only racetrack in the area that allowed children to attend. He put $2 to show on a horse for me that won. I was hooked.
How many times (and in which years) have you previously qualified for the DRF/NTRA NHC? This will be my sixth year in a row attending the NHC Finals.
What is your best finish in a handicapping tournament, and what is your largest tournament payout? I have won 10 tournaments with the largest payout being the $25,200 that I won at Sports Haven CT in 2008.
What wager created the largest payout for you? Please elaborate on the circumstances (date, track, etc.)? $928 exacta in the 2011 Belmont Stakes.
What is your most memorable horse racing experience? Being at Garden State Park the day it burned down.
Do you have any interesting hobbies, experiences or past accomplishments that others might find unique or interesting? My other hobby is the financial markets.
Does anyone else in your family share your enthusiasm as a horseplayer? Not yet.
What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? Raising 17-year-old twin boys.
What would you do with the NHC grand prize if you won? College and investments.
Which person in Thoroughbred racing would you most like to have dinner with? Mark Patterson, the handicapper at Mountaineer Park. Listening to him and his in-depth analysis of every horse in the race has made me a much better handicapper. Being at Mountaineer keeps him under the radar. However, he is one of the best in the business.
