Voices From The Grandstand

  • Owner Ahmed Zayat on his horse Paynter, who overcame laminitis and colitis to win his first race since his illness on June 14 at Betfair Hollywood Park:

He is so courageous. He’s a true trooper, a special horse. He loves to do what he does, which is what he did today. What else can you say? Thank you, thank you Lord.

  • Trainer Charlie LoPresti on reigning Horse of the Year Wise Dan’s win in Grade II Firecracker this past Saturday at Churchill Downs:

It was really tough (on me), I’m just glad he got it done. I was really worried about it. I had been worried about the weights. It wasn’t so much the weight on him, but the spread. The first thing I said to Johnny (Velazquez) was, ‘Is he OK?’ because it wasn’t a pretty race. Now that it’s over I can tell you I was worried. I’m proud of him. He’s a pretty amazing horse.

  • Trainer Shug McGaughey on Kentucky Derby winner Orb after visiting the colt at Fair Hill Training Center the other day, in This Is Horse Racing:

It’s fun to see him. I think he’s done really well. I’m very pleased with what I see and how his attitude is and how he’s coming back a bit. I saw some of the stuff this morning that I saw back in the winter. He’s doing some stupid things, that they do when they feel good. He walked out and wouldn’t go at one point. That’s fine. He was playing coming off the track. I like to see that.
