Voices From The Grandstand

  • Chantal Sutherland commenting in the Paulick Report on why she is returning to the saddle to ride during the Del Mar meet:

I miss riding, the adrenaline of getting on a horse and going fast.

  • Winning trainer Bob Baffert after Game on Dude won for the second time and in consecutive years the Grade I Hollywood Gold Cup this past Saturday at Betfair Hollywood Park:

He just finds more gears as he goes along. There’s added pressure when you train a horse like him. He has a fan base now. You don’t want to see him get beat because of the fans. I can hear them cheering him on. When they turned for home, it was like the whole place was on my side.

  • Trainer Graham Motion reflecting on the departure of champion Animal Kingdom, 2011 Kentucky Derby winner, who recently was retired and entered stud duty in This Is Horse Racing:

I’d like to think I tried to make the most of everything we had with him. It’s not an era, but it’s the end of something.

  • In May 1947, Red Smith wrote sardonically about the debut of Sunshine Park (now Tampa Bay Downs) via The Atlantic:

It has a totalizer, a daily double, touts, a 37-percent average of winning favorites, forms, scratch sheets and handicappers' cards for sale at the gate, seasoned, alert racing officials and—oh yes—horses of a sort. Which makes it as close an approximation of paradise as an honest man has a right to expect.
