Two-Minute Lick - Chip McGaughey

The son of Hall of Fame trainer Claude R. “Shug” McGaughey III, Chip McGaughey grew up surrounded by Thoroughbred racing, and he looks forward to using his knowledge and experience to promote interest in horse racing to a new and younger fan base.

He has spent the greater part of his life in Lexington, Ky., and is an alumnus of Lexington Catholic High School. In 2010, he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science from the University of Kentucky. Chip’s professional background includes working in marketing and sales. During his free time, he enjoys playing golf, spending time with his family, exercising, attending University of Kentucky sporting events — and, of course, visiting the racetrack.

Name: Claude Ray McGaughey IV but I go by “Chip” - I guess I am just a chip off the old block.

Hometown: Lexington, Ky.

How and when I was introduced to Thoroughbred racing: By both my parents at a very young age.

My favorite racetrack: Would have to be a tie between Keeneland and Saratoga; both have exceptional quality of racing and great atmospheres.

My favorite Thoroughbred racing event: I really enjoy the Breeders’ Cup. The level of competition for these events cannot be matched.

Other sports/teams I follow: The University of Kentucky Wildcats (Basketball and Football), Miami Heat, Miami Dolphins, and I am a huge fan of professional golf.

What I would like to see more of in Thoroughbred racing: More young people involved in the sport, both as fans as well as working in the industry.

What I would like to see less of in Thoroughbred Racing: Negative mainstream media attention.

Three words that define what Thoroughbred racing means to me: Prestige, Competition, and Excitement

First Thoroughbred track I ever attended was: I think it was Churchill Downs; I was really little though so I do not remember it. First track I actually remember, though, was probably Saratoga.

Favorite all-time Thoroughbred: Close tie between Easy Goer, Personal Ensign, and Coronado’s Quest. I was too young to remember Easy Goer and Personal Ensign but really enjoyed seeing Coronado’s Quest run when I was younger. Right now Point of Entry is my favorite horse in training, but I am also very big on Kentucky Derby hopeful Orb. Hopefully, both these horses will have very successful years and win a bunch of big races.

My personal best moment in the sport of Thoroughbred racing: Being in attendance when my father was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Best racetrack food can be found at: The chili dogs and bread pudding at Keeneland can’t be beat.

My favorite jockey: Mike Smith. He has been my favorite since I was little.

My favorite trainer: Got to give this one to my dad, Shug McGaughey.

My heroes: Close toss up between Spiderman and Superman. Both are exceptional superheroes.

Person in Thoroughbred racing I’d like to have dinner with: I would want to have dinner with Rashard Lewis. He is a Thoroughbred owner and also plays basketball for the Miami Heat so you couldn’t go wrong there. Try to entice him to get Lebron to get out to the track.

Favorite animal other than a horse: Dog. I have an English Bulldog named Gotti.

Favorite non-Thoroughbred racing sports event I have attended: The United States Open golf tournament at Bethpage Black in 2009.

Favorite musician/band: Too many to choose just one. I listen to a lot of different music. Classic rock like The Velvet Underground and Led Zeppelin; 80's hair rock like Motley Crue; and hip hop such as A$AP Rocky, Schoolboy Q, and Pusha T.

Favorite TV show: “The Wire” is easily my favorite TV show but also “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, “Workaholics, and “Parks and Recreation.

Websites I visit daily: I read the Thoroughbred Daily News, Blood-Horse, Paulick Report, and Indian Charlie along with Facebook, Twitter, and finally Nah Right for music.

Favorite movie about horse racing: Let It Ride with Richard Dreyfuss.

What I like about my job: Being able to travel across the U.S. to the biggest racing events. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Favorite Tech gadget: My iPhone 5

Twitter Handle: @Chip_McGaughey

People I follow on Twitter: @ToddTVG, @RayPaulick, @SimonTVG, @GSElevator, anyone that has anything to do with Thoroughbred racing, hip hop music, sports, humor, news, and also all my friends.

Funniest fellow Brand Ambassador: Would have to be John “Fern-Daddy Dollas” Cox

Do you the other Brand Ambassadors have any nicknames for you so far? They call me Chip.

Race event I am most excited to see this year on the ABRV Tour: I can’t wait to attend the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita this November.  I have never been to any of the West Coast tracks so I am really looking forward to that.

What are three must-haves you’ll be taking with you on the ABRV Tour? My phone, laptop, and wallet.

What are some qualities you are looking for in a bus driver? A good sense of humor and the ability to safely get us to and from each destination. Basically, someone like Otto, the bus driver from The Simpsons.

Which celebrity would be the seventh Brand Ambassador? Ron Swanson from “Parks and Recreation. Keep it real manly.

Where would you live if you couldn’t live in Lexington? I hate cold weather so anywhere that it is warm year round … probably Miami or Los Angeles.

What's the most money you ever won at a track? Nothing too big, but I have won several hundred dollars on a couple different occasions.

Favorite horse racing digital game? The Final Furlong arcade game and Gallop Racer.

What do you want to be doing in five years? I would like to be involved in the Thoroughbred industry still. Maybe working for a track in their marketing department, continuing to get younger fans out to the track.

Favorite expression overheard at a race track?  “Get up!”

Why should Millennials be attracted to Thoroughbred racing? Because it is a classic sport that truly has something for everyone. Who wouldn’t want to spend the day with friends sipping drinks and betting on some horses?

Leno, Letterman or Kimmel—who’s your guy? I don’t watch late night talk shows.  I would probably be watching a movie or something saved on my DVR instead.
