NHC News

Name: Tim Herboth

Chicago, Ill.

"Retired" nuclear power plant designer, options Trader, horseplayer and poker player

Favorite track: Saratoga and Del Mar

Favorite wager: Pick Six

Qualifying site:

How did you first get into horse racing? While waiting for a dentist office appointment I picked up a copy of Sports Illustrated and read an article about the 1967 Woodward Stakes featuring Buckpasser, Damascus and Dr. Fager. This inspired me to go to the track for the first time to see Dr. Fager win the Hawthorne Gold Cup the following month.

How many times (and in which years) have you previously qualified for the DRF/NTRA NHC? I have qualified five times: 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

What wager created the largest payout for you? I hit the pick six on Jockey Gold Cup Day at Belmont Park in 1994.

What is your most memorable horse racing experience?  The "White Turf". Watching racing on a frozen lake in St. Moritz Switzerland.

Do you have any interesting hobbies, experiences or past accomplishments that others might find unique or interesting? My wife and I try to attend at least one new racetrack somewhere in the world each year. In the past we visited Switzerland for "The White Turf" in St. Moritz. Other races we have been to include the Japan Cup at Tokyo Race Course, the Irish Derby at The Curragh, Dubai World Cup, King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Deauville, Epsom Derby and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe twice. At each track we try to learn how to bet in the language of the country we are visiting.

Does anyone else in your family share your enthusiasm as a horseplayer? My wife, Tracy, is a very good handicapper of her own and is a very enthusiastic fan of the sport.

What accomplishment in your life are you most proud of? Learning to fly.

What would you do with the NHC grand prize if you won? We would travel more (we do a fair amount already), bank some, pad the betting bankroll and maybe purchase a racehorse or two.

Fan Photo of the week

Congratulations to Kathryn Sharp, winner of this week's Fan Photo Contest!

From Kathryn: "Newly imported Argentinian colt, Deselvo, was eager to show off on his first day at Fair Hill Training Center! It was a day of firsts: first bell boots, first polos, first round pen experience, and first near heart attack for those of us watching him play like a 1000 lb. toddler in a sandbox!" Want in?
