ABRV - FASHION

With Keeneland’s spring meet finally here, bright dresses and big hats are de rigueur in the Lexington racing scene. This Saturday is also a huge race day for Thoroughbred racing across the country with the $1 million Arkansas Derby at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., and the $750,000 Bluegrass Stakes at Keeneland, both of which are Grade 1 Kentucky Derby prep races.

Whatever your location, dressing for the spring races is all about bright colors, distinctive patterns, stunning hats and fitted dresses in classic styles. The Peppermint Palm, a signature Lilly Pulitzer boutique with locations in Lexington and Louisville, showed us their finest race day attire, which includes lots of Lilly Pulitzer’s bright floral designs and beautiful custom hats by Madalyn Haake.

Peppermint Palm’s Rebecca Anderson and Katherine Garmer kindly sat down with me to reveal their style icons, favorite spring trends, and of course, how to dress for this weekend’s big races.

Mary Frances Dale: Where are you from?

Katherine Anderson: London, Ky.

Rebecca Garmer: Chicago area

Dale: Who is your fashion icon?

Anderson and Garmer: Jackie O.

Dale: I agree. Jackie Onassis embodies a timeless elegance. Who are some current designers you admire?

Anderson and Garmer: Of course, Lilly Pullitzer and Diane von Fürstenberg. Milly and Tibi, too. They have a great way of using bright colors and patterns that look unique and classic.

Dale: Can you tell us your favorite spring trends?

Anderson and Garmer: Neon and bright spring colors. Nothing says spring like bright pink and green, sundresses and flip flops.

Dale: What do you look for when creating the perfect outfit?

Anderson: Fit and function … it has to fit!  And finding an outfit that works for several occasions (like a Lilly dress) is always a plus.

Garmer: Fit that flatters my body style - something that I’m comfortable in that is still cute.

Dale: With the Bluegrass Stakes and Arkansas Derby this weekend, what will you be wearing to the races?

Anderson: Lilly! We will be at the Bluegrass Stakes this weekend and a Lilly dress with heels and pearls is perfect for the Keeneland Clubhouse. The same dress is perfect with flip flops in the grandstand.

Dale: What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you?

Anderson: Fashion wise - a $500 dress can look like a disaster if I doesn’t fit well, and the right fit can make a $5 dress can look like a million bucks.

And Lilly herself said it best, “life’s a party, dress like it.” Have fun with fashion!

Dale:
What differences do you see in Lexington fashion versus other cities that you travel to?

Anderson: Lexington is more classic and preppy, lots of Lilly, polos, Jack Rogers and button ups.
