ABRV - FASHION

It’s not often that you hear of a rigorous dress code these days, but British racing’s most prestigious event, Royal Ascot, still adheres by a code of dress that harkens back to a more genteel time.  If you are lucky enough to be within the Royal Enclosure, you will be mingling amidst an elite international crowd, ranging from royalty and aristocrats to celebs and socialites.  In other words, this is not a t-shirt and cutoffs affair and the Royal Ascot staff is serious about guests adhering to their strict standard of attire.

With an updated dress code for 2013, top hats are de rigueur for men while ladies must wear hats with at least a four-inch base—fascinators don’t count.  Dresses must be modest in both length and straps, with a hemline brushing the knees and straps that are at least one inch in width.  In anticipation of the event, Ascot Racecourse released a video of gorgeous models sporting proper attire for the event.

Think Kate Middleton, not Paris Hilton, and you’re on the right track.  Timeless elegance is key to Royal Ascot’s fashion scene and for an event with such history, Royal Ascot’s attendees carry on the tradition of refined poise and grace.

For the Royal Enclosure, gents are required to wear black or grey morning dress, which must include a waistcoat and tie and a black or grey top hat and black shoes. The Royal Enclosure is also where the “no fascinator” rule applies for ladies.  If you’re in the grandstand, the rules are loosened slightly, but an old-school formality still reigns supreme.

Charles Barnett, chief executive at Ascot Racecourse, says: “A day out at Royal Ascot is a very special and memorable experience, of which attire plays a huge part. We were incredibly impressed with how everyone really got into the spirit of the occasion last year.”

To help attendees adhere to the guidelines, Ascot had a team of twenty dress code assistants on hand to help visitors with last minute issues with attire.

And of course, who doesn’t love the Queen? Her choice of a subdued blush colored suit worked perfectly in combination with her elegant hat.

After navigating the dress requirements, guests are royally rewarded with a first-rate event, including lavish amounts of Champagne, Pimm’s, lobster, and macaroons.  According to Ascot Racecourse, the 2012 Royal Ascot included the consumption of:

  • 51,549 bottles of Champagne
  • 44,524 glasses of Pimm’s
  • 50,000 pistachio and raspberry macaroons
  • 2,050 fresh lobsters
  • 35,000 local spears of asparagus
  • 3,300 punnets of strawberries

Who doesn’t love a good party?  Despite a penchant for archaic formalities and top hats, the Brits still know how to have a good time.
