This Saturday we are heading to Miami, not to scout for Housewives ... but to enjoy the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park!

As Thoroughbreds prepare to meet one another and try to earn points for the chance at the Kentucky Derby, we are preparing our outfits for the big race day!

FL Derby Ladies

"Miami Chic" has been a trending statement in the horse racing industry ever since The Stronach Group put on the fabulous Eclipse Awards.

This trend still applies as we head into the sunny day at Gulfstream Park. What is "Miami Chic"? Think summer dresses crossed with the famous Penny Chenery style of fitted skirts and shirts and blouses. You want to choose bright colors with light fabrics with a fitted top and a flowing skirt, or go for the opposite, a fitted skirt with a flowing top!

Leave the LBD's at home. You want to rock up in bright pinks, oranges, yellows, teals, etc. Save your black number for the Belmont Stakes in New York. This is Miami! Live it up!

For shoes you can bring out the sandals and nicely done pedicures (with bright colors of course). Bright colored heels or wedges will fit perfectly. However, this is a BIG race day so don't dress your outfit down with corkey or braided shoes. If you're going for a wedge, pick a printed or a solid pair...if you don't know what we mean see the examples below.

Cork/Braided espadrilles bring a dressed up outfit down to a more laid back look and that's not what we are going for at the Florida Derby. Keep your shoes as dressed up as the rest of your outfit!

FL Derby Wedges

The most important piece of any gal's racing outfit is, of course, the hat. For this Florida race day, leave the Kentucky Derby, big-brimmed piece at home.

When you think of Miami you think of fun, vibrant, modern pieces, so make sure your hat exemplifies that. It's also going to be in the mid-70s, which is the perfect hat-wearing weather. You don't want a heavy piece weighing down your fab hairstyle, especially when you'll be visiting the Miami strip after the last race! You can still find pieces that will shade your face without hiding it.

Grab a stylish clutch to finish off your outfit. There is no reason to bring a huge bag to the races; it's harder to find your winning tickets that way! If possible, find a bag with a skinny shoulder strap so you can be hands free to enjoy the day!

Finally, as always, play with accessories to bring your racing outfit to the next level: collars, lace gloves, statement necklaces, belts, etc.
