Both Fort Larned, who won the 2012 Breeders' Cup Classic, and Mucho Macho Man, who finished second in the race are pre-entered for the 2013 edition of the race (Photos courtesy of Eclipse Sportswire).

With the Breeders’ Cup just nine days away, the event’s pre-entries didn’t have very many surprises when they were released on Oct. 23.

As expected, many races are oversubscribed at this point in the entry stage, with seven of the 14 races attracting 14 or more entries. However, many of the 14 fields have horses cross-entered in other races. All races but the Dirt Mile, which allows 12 entries and two also-eligible horses, will have 14 horses plus the two also-eligibles (if there are enough entries) after final entries close on Oct. 28.

Of the biggest races on the card, the most jam packed with star power may be the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff. The field drew only six fillies and mares but five of those females have won at least a Grade 2 race and two won Breeders’ Cup races last year, with Beholder winning the 2012 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and Royal Delta winning the last two editions of the Distaff. The match up many hoped for between Princess of Sylmar, Royal Delta, and Beholder was also confirmed in the official pre-entries with all three only entered in that race.

The Breeders' Cup Classic has also attracted a competitive field with the top four placers of last year's Classic and Game On Dude, who finished sixth in last year's race, also returning. If Game On Dude wins the Breeders' Cup Classic and Wise Dan loses the Breeders' Cup Mile, Game On Dude could win his first Horse of the Year title. Top 3-year-olds Palace Malice, winner of the 2013 Belmont Stakes, and Will Take Charge, winner of the Travers Stakes, are also pre-entered for the race.

Overall, a field of 13 has pre-entered the Breeders' Cup Classic, including foreign invaders Declaration of War and Planteur and last year's Haskell Invitational winner Paynter.

Owner-wise, Americans Ken and Sarah Ramsey are going all out at the Breeders’ Cup with seven horses pre-entered in the two days worth of races, with Dixiana Breeders’ Futurity hero We Miss Artie entered in both the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Nearly all of the Ramseys’ pre-entries are foals by their stallion Kitten’s Joy, who finished second in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Turf.

The Breeders’ Cup brings an extra dose of excitement for fans of recent years’ editions of the championship weekend as nine winners of previous races will be returning this year with seven looking to defend last year’s win including Royal Delta in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, Fort Larned in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and Wise Dan in the Breeder’s Cup Mile.

To see what post position your favorite horse gets in the Breeders’ Cup, tune in to HRTV at 3:30 E.T. on Monday, Oct. 28 for the post position draw for all 14 Breeders’ Cup races. The Breeders’ Cup will be held on Nov. 1 and 2 at Santa Anita Park.
