In June of 2012, it was announced by Churchill Downs that the 2013 Kentucky Derby prep season would have even more importance than usual for 3-year-olds when 36 races were selected as those that would set the field for the Kentucky Derby (G1) in the new "Road to the Kentucky Derby" series.
Instead of horses qualifying for the race due to earnings in any graded stakes race as had been done since 1986, the top four finishers in the 36 race prep season would earn points to qualify for the Derby field. There are three legs in the prep season consisting of different point values, with points in the current “Kentucky Derby Prep Season”, which started last fall, distributed on a 10-4-2-1 scale.
As of Jan. 5, Goldencents is the current points leader with 24 points after winning the Sham Stakes (G3). Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) winner Shanghai Bobby is currently ranked second with 20 points and seven colts have 10 points apiece in the third spot. Below is the chart with the top 36 Kentucky Derby contenders.
