Fan favorite Paynter took the lead in the stretch but could not hold off fast-finishing Kettle Corn in the San Diego Handicap on July 27 at Del Mar, where he settled for a game runner-up finish.

Paynter showed incredible heart with his will to survive life-threatening colitis and laminitis following his 2012 victory in the Haskell Invitational Stakes. He thrilled his legion of loyal followers with a win in June at Hollywood Park in his comeback race.

The long-range target for Paynter is the Breeders' Cup World Championship, so his owner Zayat Stables and his faithful following hope the best is yet to come for the 4-year-old Awesome Again colt.

For additional details about Paynter's remarkable recovery, be sure to watch the video below with commentary from veterinarian Laura Javsicas, who attended to Paynter. Also don't miss Tom Pedulla's feature on Paynter and blogger Michael Burns heartfelt piece about Paynter: Necesitamos Héroes (We Need Heroes).
