Hard Spun regains winning form in Lane's End
The Blood-Horse, March 24, 2007
Fox Hill Farms' Hard Spun regained his status as a leading Triple Crown contender with a powerful win in the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds on Turfway Park's all-weather track Saturday.
With regular rider Mario Pino aboard, Hard Spun, prompting the pace while three wide, took the lead on the far turn and took command in the stretch. Under steady urging, the Danzig colt edged away through the lane to register a 3 1/4-length victory over Sedgefield. It was 3 1/4 lengths farther back to Joe Got Even, who rallied from last after a half-mile to loom as a danger before flattening out in the stretch. The final time for the 1 1/8-mile event was a strong 1:49 2/5.
The Pennsylvania-bred Hard Spun won his first four starts by a combined 28 lengths before faltering in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park in his last start when he finished fourth as the 1-2 favorite. His return Saturday was compromised by the 10 post and created a dilemma for Pino, who usu

| Race Comments: HARD SPUN pressed the pace three wide while restrained, took over on the second turn on his own initiative, responded willingly in the stretch when asked and increased his lead under steady urging. SEDGEFIELD within striking distance four wide, bumped with FOREFATHERS near the three furlong marker when following the winner, angled outside HARD SPUN in upper stretch, could not menace that one in the drive but continued gamely to be second best. JOE GOT EVEN outrun early four wide, was fanned six wide late on the second turn when making a good gain but could not sustain the bid. FOR YOU REPPO angled in when outsprinted early, moved back out five wide when rallying with a quarter mile to go but had no late bid. STARBASE vied for the lead along the inside, battled BULLARA and then the winner to the stretch and tired. TWILIGHT METEOR reserved off the inside, stayed on well to the stretch but failed to respond in the drive. HIGHEST DEGREE outrun along the inside, improved his position while no threat. SPORTS TOWN lost his footing at the start, quickly gained a forward position, moved out four wide entering the stretch and gave way. APPROVAL RATING outrun along the inside, moved off the rail for the second turn and could not menace. BULLARA forced the pace off the inside and faded. HELIOS as outrun. FOREFATHERS close up between rivals, was bounced around between rivals with three furlongs to go, stopped badly and was eased up late. |
