Tiago takes his cue from brother Giacomo
By Jay Privman
Daily Racing Form, April 07, 2007
ARCADIA, Calif. - Record magnate Jerry Moss has been responsible for some of the greatest music of the past 40 years, but the song he likes humming best, "My Old Kentucky Home," is older than all of us.
Two years ago, Moss, his wife, Ann, trainer John Shirreffs, and jockey Mike Smith combined to win the Kentucky Derby with Giacomo. On Saturday, they earned a return trip to Churchill Downs with Giacomo's half-brother Tiago, who rallied from ninth to first to capture the Grade 1, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby before a crowd estimated at 49,000.
As with Giacomo in the Kentucky Derby, Tiago ($60.60) was a longshot in this race. He was the second-longest price in the 10-horse field, owing to several factors. He had made just three starts, had never crossed the wire first - his win against maidens Jan. 21 was via disqualification - and most recently had finished seventh in the Robert Lewis Stakes here on March 3.

| Race Comments: TIAGO a bit slow to begin, angled in and settled inside then off the rail, advanced three deep into the second turn then toward the inside leaving that turn, came out again in midstretch, angled inward in deep stretch and finished gamely under steady left handed urging to get up. KING OF THE ROXY four wide early, stalked outside, bid three deep into the stretch to gain the lead in midstretch, inched clear but could not hold off the winner. SAM P. dueled inside, stalked along the rail leaving the backstretch and on the second turn, came out a bit into the stretch, split rivals in midstretch and bested the others. LIQUIDITY bobbled slightly at the start, pulled between foes early, stalked a bit off the rail, bid three deep on the backstretch and outside a rival into and on the second turn, took a short advantage into the stretch, fought back some in midstretch but weakened in the final furlong. BWANA BULL chased outside a rival or a bit off the rail, came out in the stretch and lacked the needed rally. MEDICI CODE (GB) broke a bit slowly, angled in outside a rival then inside on the backstretch, went around horses on the second turn, drifted back to the inside in the stretch and did not rally. COURT THE KING saved ground chasing the pace, came out in midstretch and was not a threat. BLACK SEVENTEEN three deep early, dueled outside a rival then along the inside into and on the second turn and weakened in the stretch. BOUTROUS steadied in tight early, settled outside a rival, continued outside on the backstretch, dropped back on the second turn, drifted out into the stretch and had nothing left for the drive. LEVEL RED pulled between horses then stalked off the rail, dropped back on the second turn and gave way. |
