Tale of Ekati wins Cigar on DQ
By Tom LaMarra   The Blood-Horse, November 29, 2008

Charles Fipke’s Tale of Ekati finished a nose behind Stronach Stables’ Harlem Rocker when the horses hit the wire in the Hill ‘n’ Dale Cigar Mile (gr. I) at Aqueduct on Saturday, but was placed first after stewards disqualified Harlem Rocker for interference in the stretch.

Trained by Barclay Tagg and ridden by Edgar Prado, Tale of Ekati raced well off the pace as California invader Monterrey Jazz set quick fractions of :22.87 for the first quarter-mile, :45.31 for a half-mile, and 1:09.42 for six furlongs on a fast track. As the field began to bunch up at the top of the lane, Harlem Rocker, ridden by Eibar Coa for trainer Todd Pletcher, got the jump and opened up daylight on the other closers.

Race Comments: HARLEM ROCKER unhurried during the run down the backstretch, steadily advanced into contention in the two path during the run around the bend, swung outward turning for home, collared the leader soon after entering the stretch, lugged inward from a right handed whip in the vicinity of the furlong marker, dug in when TALE OF EKATI made his presence and gamely turned back that one. TALE OF EKATI took the inside route, was making his way into contention when he was forced to be steadied when HARLEM ROCKER came inward midstretch, altered course outward, resumed his rally after being straightened away and finished with good determination. BRIBON (FR) outrun for three-quarters, was checked hard when bothered at the quarter pole, then finished strongly along the outside. ARSON SQUAD devoid of early foot, was forced outward by a rival in distress turning for home, proceeded to rally with good energy. KODIAK KOWBOY lacked the necessary stretch response. STORM PLAY pursued the leader while three wide until upper stretch before giving way. MONTEREY JAZZ cut a grueling pace for six furlongs while being kept off the inside, had nothing left to offer for the stretch run. VISIONAIRE unhurried for three-quarters, was forced to check approaching the quarter pole when bothered by the stricken rival. WANDERIN BOY forwardly placed for six furlongs, broke down turning for home, was pulled up and vanned off. Following a Stewards' inquiry focusing on the stretch run, HARLEM ROCKER was disqualified from first and placed second for causing interference in the stretch.
