Bashford Manor: Backtalk flashes late kick
By Tim Nichols
Thoroughbred Times, July 03, 2009
Gold Mark Farm’s Backtalk willingly accelerated in the final furlong and scored a clear victory in the $110,500 Bashford Manor Stakes (G3) on Friday at Churchill Downs.
Ridden by Miguel Mena for trainer Tom Amoss, Backtalk slightly brushed Grand Slam Andre in early stretch and then unleashed a powerful turn of foot to win the six-furlong race for 2-year-olds by one length in 1:11.08 on a track rated fast.
Backed as the 4-5 favorite, Backtalk stumbled at the start as Soundman was rushed to the front and clipped off fractions of :21.98 for a quarter-mile and :45.84 for a half-mile.

| Race Comments: BACKTALK stumbled at the start, recovered to race behind the leaders while in the two path, angled out for a clear path ion midstretch and finished well to be up in time. FLATTER THAN ME closest to the pace off the inside, challenged on the turn, drew clear in midstretch and held on gamely while unable to withstand the winner's late bid. BRASSY BOY drifted in at the start, was straightened to race within striking distance, saved ground on the turn then lacked the needed closing bid. GRAND SLAM ANDRE a bit awkward leaving the chute after attempting to bear in at the start, was straightened and angled out in the initial furlong, tracked the leaders three wide around the turn, maintained good position to the final furlong and lacked a late bid. SOUNDMAN sprinted clear and angled in, set the pace for a half inside, came off the rail for the drive and weakened. WESTROCK GOLD reserved off the inside, was no real threat. VITO FILITTO lost his footing at the start, was outrun in the five path and never reached contention. EVEN WILDER outsprinted early, raced three wide on the turn and faded. |
