Le Grand Cru guts out Bold Ruler win
By David Grening
Daily Racing Form, October 31, 2009
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens looked at the tote board prior to the running of Saturday's Grade 3, $150,000 Bold Ruler Handicap at Aqueduct and saw his horse, Le Grand Cru, was the longest shot on the board at odds of 7-1.
"He's the least thought of of all the horses?" Jerkens recalled thinking. "I'm not a very good handicapper. To quote the great Hirsch Jacobs, 'It's better to be surprised than disappointed.'"

| Race Comments: LE GRAND CRU in hand early, followed LUCKY ISLAND's bid for the lead around the turn, while placed just outside that rival's hind quarters, pressed the new pacesetter while keeping something in reserve, swung three wide into the stretch, rallied in earnest when given his cute in upper stretch, forged to a slim advantage during the run through the furlong grounds, then dug in stubbornly under good handling to preserve it. PAST THE POINT well rated during the opening stages, moved into contention three wide during the run around the bend while still remaining in hand, was set down approaching the head of the stretch, battled heads apart for the lead while drifting out noticeably, conceded the advantage midstretch, but continued on with good courage to garner place honors. SING BABY SING on the lead early, was content to yield to a pair of challengers, angled outward midway on the turn to do battle, closed willingly during the stretch run, despite being out a bit during the late stages by the runner up. CHEROKEE COUNTRY failed to menace. LUCKY ISLAND (ARG) bid for the lead in tandem with winner soon after going a quarter, remained a pace factor until upper stretch and gave way. |
