Sinister Minister in a runaway
By Jay Privman
Daily Racing Form, April 15, 2006
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Bob Baffert has turned into the king of the road in this year's Kentucky Derby prep races. He has had modest success at his home base of Santa Anita with his 3-year-olds, but when the three-time Derby-winning trainer has gone out of town, he has reaped the rewards.
Last week, in a driving rainstorm at Aqueduct, Baffert captured the Wood Memorial with Bob and John, and on Saturday, on a warm, sultry afternoon at Keeneland, he sent out Sinister Minister for a smashing upset victory in the Grade 1, $750,000 Blue Grass Stakes.

| Race Comments: SINISTER MINISTER broke in the air, rushed to the lead after recovering, set a fast pace along the inside, and drew off in the stretch while under brisk left handed pressure. STORM TREASURE bumped with STRONG CONTENDER after the start, was outrun early along the inside, moved around LITTLE CLIFF with three furlongs to go, angled back to the inside and made a solid run to the furlong marker, could not sustain that rally but held on to be second best. STRONG CONTENDER bumped after the start, raced within striking distance inside, moved closest to the pace from the inside after a half, moved off the rail on the second turn and gave way. BLUEGRASS CAT forwardly placed off the inside, tired. FIRST SAMURAI within striking distance four wide, stayed well for six furlongs and faded. SEASIDE RETREAT angled in in the run to the first turn, could not menace. SADLER'S TRICK was always outrun. LITTLE CLIFF close up while off the inside, stopped. COURT FOLLY lost his footing a bit at the start and was no factor. |
