The Stormin Fever colt stalked a swift pace set by Miner’s Reserve in the 1 1/8-mile race and outdueled that foe in the stretch for a 1 3/4-length win for trainer Tony Dutrow and owner-breeder Edward P. Evans.
“I felt strongly he was going to run a terrific race, but I didn’t know if that was going to be good enough to ...

Race Comments: A LITTLE WARM prompted the pace on the outside, engaged the leader on the far turn, was asked for his best in upper stretch, gained a short lead passing the furlong marker then inched clear under left hand urging. MINER'S RESERVE was asked a bit from the start, dropped in early on the first turn, set the pace through solid fractions, vied inside on the far turn, was set down in upper stretch, lost the lead near the furlong marker and was outfinished while able to hold the place. AFLEET EXPRESS bumped with a rival at the start, settled just off the rail on the first turn, moved out nearing the half-mile pole, was urged along while three to four wide on the far turn, raced under heavy encouragement in upper stretch, drifted in under right hand urging then brushed with FRIEND OR FOE late and got up for the show. FRIEND OR FOE raced three wide on the first turn, settled on the outside, chased three wide on the far turn, was carried in a bit late then brushed with a rival and missed the show. FLY DOWN was quickly guided in after the start, settled while off the rail, was roused on the far turn, split rivals coming to the furlong marker, was carried in then checked sharply late and lost any chance at a minor award. STEINBECK (IRE) was fractious behind the gate, bumped with a rival at the start and was carried in, settled on the inside, was roused while continuing to save ground on the far turn and failed to rally. AIKENITE raced two to three wide on the first turn, settled on the outside, was urged along while four to five wide on the far turn and failed to respond. STORMY'S MAJESTY saved ground on the first turn, was well placed while a bit off the rail on the backstretch, came under a ride while saving ground on the far turn and faded.
