- Family: daughter Jessica, sons Jeffrey and Justin
- Racing Background: Mullins has been involved with horses since childhood, galloping horses when he was 8 years old and riding some races as a teenager at bush tracks in Utah and Wyoming ... Started training at 17, taking a string of horses to Les Bois Park in Boise, Idaho, and conditioning them under his father’s name for a couple of years before returning to Utah … His first winner was Doctorius in 1980 ridden by Gary Stevens
- Racing Career: Began his solo training career at Beulah Park in Ohio and then moved west to Rillito Downs in Tucson, Ariz., to train for a couple of years before moving northward to Turf Paradise in Phoenix ... Success at Turf Paradise brought about a move to California where he found new clients. "We got rolling from there," Mullins said ... Saddled runners in four consecutive Kentucky Derbys with Lusty Latin (15th) in 2002, Buddy Gil (6th) in 2003, Castledale (14th) in 2004 and Buzzards Bay (5th) in 2005 ... Became the only trainer in the 69-year history of the Santa Anita Derby to saddle three consecutive winners of the race with Buddy Gil, Castledale and Buzzards Bay ... Castledale became a grade 1 winner on both dirt and turf after capturing the 2005 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile ... Returned to the Kentucky Derby for the first time since 2005 in 2009 with G1 Wood Memorial Stakes winner I Want Revenge, who was made the morning line favorite. Unfortunately, the colt had to be scratched the morning of the race due to an leg injury ... A controversial figure in racing, Mullins was handed a seven-day suspension and fined $2,500 by the New York Racing and Wagering Board for an incident in the Aqueduct detention barn prior to the ’09 Wood Memorial. Mullins was caught administering an over-the-counter medication to Gato Go Win and was forced to scratch the horse from the Bay Shore Stakes ... Race day medication is prohibited on race day in New York except for Lasix and that has to be administered by a veterinarian ... In addition to I Want Revenge, Mullins best horses in 2009 have been G3 Rancho Bernando Stakes winner Carlsbad and Battle of Hastings, a four-time stakes winners, whose biggest win came in the $750,000 G2 Virginia Derby ... Other graded stakes winners are Captain Squire, Mighty Beau, Wild Fit, Summer Wind Dancer, Boston Common, Brooke’s Halo, King Robyn, Sweet Win, Choctaw Nation, Glick, Eastern Sand and Final Fling ... In 2007, he trained juvenile filly Comical Vacation and the turf sprinter Scottsbluff, who set a world record for 5 1/2 furlongs on the Hollywood Park lawn in winning the Bullet Stakes … Has saddled four Breeders' Cup starters, his best finishes being with Wild Fit, second in the 2005 Juvenile Fillies and with My Cousin Matt, third in the 2004 Sprint ... He scored his 1,000th career win Jan. 28, 2007 at Santa Anita ... Through Oct. 24, 2009, his stable has won 77 races from 310 starts and earned $3,388,022.
