Biography and Highlights:
|
|
- Resident: Windham, New Hampshire
- Background: Gill's principal business is mortgage banking
- Initial interest in racing came by chance one day when he was walking home from work and slipped through a frozen brook. Rockingham Park was the closest place to dry off and warm up, and Gill had $20 in his pocket. He played a straight exacta and collected $260 and has been hooked ever since
- Racing operation: Dominant trainer in pure numbers since 2000. That year, Gill's stable won 205 races to rank second nationally. Followed up with No. 5 national ranking in 2001 after winning 133 races and another No. 2 ranking in 2002 when scoring 228 victories on the year. Poised to win his first national leading owner title in 2003, leading the nation in wins and earnings heading into October
- Earned perhaps his biggest victory in the national spotlight on the 2003 Preakness undercard when Pioneer Boy won the Maryland Breeders' Cup and stablemates Tasty Caberneigh and Highway Prospector dead-heated for the show
- Employs trainers Mark Shuman, Jerry Robb, Julio Canani and Gamaliel Vazquez to handle his stable, which numbers upwards of 275 active racehorses at any time
- Known for aggressive claiming style and nonchalant approach to running back at any level, placing him at odds with many of his peers
- Dominated owners standings at Delaware Park in 2000, 2001 and 2002
- Embroiled in controversy throughout 2003, stemming from the fatal breakdown of Casual Conflict and subsequent and questionable veterinary practices performed. Gill and trainer Mark Shuman were exonerated of any wrongdoing, but the incident soured Gill's record-setting meet at Gulfstream Park
- Gill bought Forest Music at auction in February of 2003 for $325,000.
