  • Racing Background: Grew up on the Churchill Downs backstretch learning his trade from his father, Jerry Romans, who passed away in 2000 … Credits his father with having the greatest influence on his career. "The biggest thing he ever taught me – the racetrack is a small world. Don't cheat anybody if you want to survive." ... Says he also learned from watching other trainers at Churchill Downs, particularly Don Winfrey, Greg Foley, Angel Montana and Bernie Flint. “I watched the people [trainers] at the gap, watched what they’ve done right and what they’ve done wrong, and taken a little bit of good from all of them,” he said
  • Racing Career: Romans' graded stakes winners in 2009 include Swift Temper, Hull, Eaton's Gift, and Thorn Song. The later two have since been transferred to a different barn after Romans split with owner, Zayat Stable ...  Swift Temper added the G1 Ruffian, G2 Delaware, and G3 Sixty Sails Handicaps to her resume this year. "I think outside of the top two or three (older fillies and mares), she’s as good as anybody. She’s really gotten good this summer," said Romans of the 5-year-old daughter of Giant's Causeway. Thorn Song was victorious in the G1 Shoemaker Mile Stakes, Eaton's Gift took the G2 Smile Sprint Handicap, and Hull won the G3 Derby Trial Stakes ... Experienced his breakout year in 2004 thanks in part to Eclipse Award-winning Kitten’s Joy, runner-up to Better Talk Now in the Breeders' Cup Turf, and G1 Whitney Handicap winner Roses in May, runner-up to Ghostzapper in the Breeders' Cup Classic. They provided Romans with his first Breeders' Cup starters. Roses in May returned in 2005 to win the G1 Donn Handicap and G1 Dubai World Cup before being retired. Kitten's Joy also was retired in 2005 after finishing second in the G1 Arlington Million ... His preparations of Sharp Humor for the G1 Kentucky Derby in 2006 were a focal point of the documentary "The First Saturday in May." ... Won his 1,000th race on June 14, 2006, at Churchill Downs with C F O Lite ... Has won training titles at Churchill, Keeneland, and Turfway Park … Key assistants are Baldemar Behena (Liberty Lane Training Center, Kentucky), Hetta Steele (Palm Meadows Training Center, Florida), Sally Schu (Gulfstream Park, Florida), and Tom Morgan (Fair Grounds, Louisiana) ... In additon to working for his father, Romans worked for Hall of Fame trainer Woody Stephens for four months. He took out his first trainer's license at age 18 and saddled his first winner on February 15, 1987 at Turfway Park with a filly named Miss Mindy, who he bought for $1,500. He also scored his first blacktype at Turfway, saddling Morning Punch in the 1991 Florence Stakes ...
