- Born: May 27, 1951, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
- Residence: Elkton, Md.
- Family: wife, Janet; sons, Christopher and Benjamin
- Racing Background: Ritchey has been riding horses since he was 2 1/2 years old, spending every weekend of his youth at his aunt and uncle's farm near Pittsburgh ... At age 18, he attended the Potomac Horse Center to further his riding education and eventually spent 1 1/2 years training with the United States Olympic Equestrian Team for the Munich games ... Went on to ride steeplechase races before becoming a trainer in 1974
- Racing Career: Ritchey reached the pinnacle of success in 2005 when he won the Preakness and Belmont Stakes with Afleet Alex, who was voted that year’s champion 3-year-old ... Winner of the Arkansas Derby, Afleet Alex was third in the Kentucky Derby, spoiling his chance to sweep the Triple Crown ... Afleet Alex provided Ritchey with his first grade 1 victory when he captured the Hopeful at Saratoga ... “It was a tremendous experience,” Ritchey said about his years with Afleet Alex. “He was such an incredible horse. With a few breaks, he could have been undefeated. It was a great ride.” ... Ritchey has been leading trainer at Delaware Park five times (1992-94, 1996 and 2001) ... Set a record with 87 wins at Delaware Park in 2001 ... Won the 1999 Pennsylvania Derby with Smart Guy ... Notched back-to-back wins in the Maryland Million Classic with Docent (2002-03) ... Owns four victories in the Francis “Jock” LaBelle Stakes at Delaware Park ... Won the 2007 Delaware Oaks with Moon Catcher ... Has had one previous starter in the Breeders’ Cup - Afleet Alex, who was second to Wilko in the 2004 Juvenile ... Has several prospects for the 2008 event at Santa Anita ... Heading the list is Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic contender Lemon Drop Mom, who was second by a nose in the grade 1 Personal Ensign to Eclipse Award winner Ginger Punch, and third behind Cocoa Beach (Chi) and the champion in the G1 Beldame.
