- Racing Background: Albertrani first made his way to the Belmont Park backstretch at age 13 when he went to work walking hots and grooming horses for his uncle, trainer Jack Abatemarco … Albertrani started learning the basics with his uncle and eventually went on to become a jockey … The family moved from Brooklyn to Valley Stream when Albertrani was 10. In order to begin riding sooner before he grew too big, Albertrani took part in an accelerated program at Valley Stream High School on Long Island and completed his course work early in 1976 ... Broke in as an apprentice in New York and New Jersey at the age of 19, but was still busy in the morning working as an exercise rider. “I was kind of doing both. I was galloping horses and picking up a mount here and there." … According to Equibase, Albertrani rode in 685 races over parts of six years and compiled a record of 49 wins, 70 seconds and 68 thirds with total purse earnings of $531,410 ... “I went to Kentucky after I lost my bug and was working for Mark Casse and I rode a few races at Churchill Downs. The first horse I rode there, I won at 90-1 for Mark. It was shortly after that that I stopped riding; the weight was getting a little difficult to make and Mark suggested I become an assistant trainer for him. I still continued to gallop horses.” … Within a couple of years, Albertrani met Bill Mott through Casse and galloped top-flight fillies Heatherten and Sefa’s Beauty for Mott.
- Racing Career:
Albertrani stayed in New York to work for Mott when Casse decided to relocate to Kentucky. Spent nine years as Mott’s top New York assistant. During that time, Mott developed champions Theatrical and Paradise Creek and Cigar emerged as a superstar … Among the other trainers Albertrani worked for were Howie Tesher and Norman Casse, and Hall of Famers P.G. Johnson, Jack Van Berg and LeRoy Jolley … In 1995, was hired by Godolphin Racing and moved his family to Dubai, United Arab Emirates, where he was a top assistant with the main Godolphin string of trainer Saeed bin Suroor. Albertrani had been introduced to members of Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation because Mott handled a few of Sheikh Mohammed’s horses ... Albertrani and his family moved to Dubai two days after Cigar won the 1995 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont Park … Among the top horses he worked with were Street Cry, Imperial Gesture, Sakhee, Fantastic Light and Daylami. While Albertrani worked with bin Suroor, Godolphin won 85 Grade 1 and Group 1 races … Albertrani and his brother, Louis, both celebrated Breeders’ Cup victories at Gulfstream the same day in 1999 with Daylami in the Turf and Artax in the Sprint … During the first six years with Godolphin, Albertrani split the year between Dubai and England. He often traveled back to the States with Godolphin shippers … “We enjoyed it,” Albertrani said of his years overseas. “It was a great experience to be able to travel and see racing in Europe. We raced all over the world – Australia, Japan, Germany, Italy, Ireland, France and England. Living there was a great cultural experience for us and our family. My daughters went to school in Dubai; my youngest was just in kindergarten when we came back, but my oldest would go to school six months there and six months in England.” … In the last two years he worked for Godolphin, Albertrani drew Dubai and U.S. assignments … In 2003, Albertrani began training in New York full-time with 10 horses for Darley, all owned by members of the Maktoum royal family of Dubai … In Oct. 2005, Albertrani opened a public stable for the first time with the permission of Darley to take on some outside clients … Albertrani registered his first official stakes winner as a trainer of record on Sept. 4, 2004, with Swither in the $250,000 NATC Sorority Futurity at Delaware Park for Darley and then saddled Balletto for his first Grade 1 win in the Frizette … In 2006, Albertrani moved into the national spotlight with Bernardini, winner of five consecutive stakes, including the Preakness. Travers and The Jockey Club Gold Cup, and that year’s champion 3-year-old ... Bernardini was second to Invasor in the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic . . . “It was a pleasure to be around a horse the caliber of Bernardini,” Albertrani said. “I was so fortunate to train him.” ... Albertrani’s other Breeders’ Cup starter was Balletto, who finished second in the 2004 Juvenile Fillies and third in the 2006 Distaff . . . Albertrani currently has 55 horses stabled in New York for 20 different owners, a group topped by Darley Stable, Padua Stable and Eugene Melnyk . . . He hopes to return to the Breeders’ Cup with a pair of Filly and Mare Turf candidates, Gozzip Girl and Criticism . . . Winner of the Grade 1 American Oaks at Hollywood Park, Gozzip Girl’s 2009 stakes wins also include the Sands Point (G2) and Herecomesthebride (G3) . . . Criticism’s 2009 stakes victories include the La Prevoyante (G2) and The Very One (G3), both at Gulfstream Park ... After starting her career in France for Henri-Alex Pantall, Criticism won the 2008 Long Island Handicap for Albertrani in her second U.S. start . . . Through mid-Sept., Albertrani had saddled the winners of 17 stakes in 2009 . . . His list of past and present stakes winners includes Deputy Glitters, Songster and Barrier Reef and Stage Luck . . Albertrani also trained Sumphin, who was ridden to victory by Edgar Prado on Feb. 10, 2008, to mark Prado's 6,000th winner ... Through Oct. 25, 2009, Albertrani has won 56 races from 256 starts and his stable has earned $3,363,455.
