Biography, Highlights and Media:
|
|
- Born: July 24, 1956, New Orleans, La.
- Residence: Elgin, Ill.
- Family: wife, Renee; daughter, Shelbi
- Racing Background: As a teenager, an uncle took notice of his diminutive size and suggested he go to the racetrack to become a jockey … Hooked up with Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg at Fair Grounds and “learned the game from the ground up.” … Eventually began exercising horses for Van Berg and then riding competitively, scoring his first victory on May 20, 1974, at Churchill Downs on a horse named Hellfire … Ranked as North America’s second-leading rider by wins in 1977 … Enjoyed a streak of at least 41 consecutive riding days with at least one win in 1977 … Won 1,792 races during a nine-year riding career before chronic knee injuries forced his retirement in 1983 ... Stayed involved with Van Berg’s barn even after his riding career was over, recalling, “I always knew I wanted to become a trainer after I gave up riding.” … Still gets on many of his own horses today ... Catalano has no hobbies outside of racing, "I don't golf or fish, I live and breathe horses."
- Racing Career: Based in Chicago, Catalano earned his eighth training title in the past 10 years at Arlington Park in 2009 following 2000, ’02, ’03, ’05, ’06, ’07 and ’08. The 2009 title was particularly rewarding for Catalano, who earlier in the year had split with his longtime client owner Frank C. Calabrese. Many had figured 2009 would be a rebuilding year for the Catalano operation, but with owners including Gary & Mary West and Darrell & Evelyn Yates, he quickly restocked his operation and picked up right where he left off. In the span of less than 90 minutes on Sept. 5, 2009, Catalano trainees won both of Arlington’s signature events for 2-year-olds, capturing the G3 Arlington-Washington Lassie with Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies hopeful She Be Wild and the G3 Arlington-Washington Futurity with Dixie Band. Catalano surpassed Harvey Vanier to move into third on Arlington’s list off all-time leading trainers with more than 730 victories at the suburban Chicago oval. Catalano bettered his own Arlington Park record with 74 wins in 2007. He also has won training titles at Sportsman’s Park in 1988 and 1989 and at Hawthorne in 1987 and 1989. His first major stakes success wins came with the Darrell and Evelyn Yates-owned Crypto Star, who captured the 1997 G3 Louisiana Derby and G2 Arkansas Derby en route to a fifth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby … Trained llinois-bred Little Sucker, who scored eight stakes victories over four years, and Cuzzy Bear, a former $5,000 claimer whom he purchased privately, and won the 1990 Hawthorne Breeders’ Cup Handicap … His initial Breeders’ Cup starter, Tamweel, finished fourth in the 2004 Distaff (now Ladies' Classic) … In 2006, he sent Dreaming of Anna to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, and she was rewarded with an Eclipse Award ... "Anna" won three stakes in 2007 and again in 2008. Among her triumps were the 2007 G3 Pucker Up at Arlington, the 2007 Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs, the 2008 Mint Julep Handicap at Churchill Downs ... She was retired after finishing sixth in the G1 First Lady Handicap at Keenland on October 4, 2008 and became a broodmare for owner Frank Calabrese ... She is in foal for the first time to Street Cry (Ire) ... Lewis Michael, Anna’s older full brother by a year, finished 11th in the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and 5th in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile. Following a win in the 2008 G2 Pat O'Brien Handicap at Del Mar, he is on track for a second shot at the Dirt Mile … Main client off and on over the years had been Frank Calabrese, Arlington's leading owner for 10 straight years though the pair split-up in early 2009 ... Other recent stakes winners include Sugar Mom and Dreaming of Liz.
