  • Family: Wife Lynda, daughter Lori, two grandchildren
  • Grew up in Hawaii
  • Education: Graduated from Brigham Young University with a political science degree

  • Began working with Thoroughbreds on a California farm
  • His 15-year career as a jockey began in Tijuana, Mexico and California
  • Obtained his trainer's license in the mid-1970s
  • Has won 20 stakes races beginning with Note of Victory's score in the 1977 Sallan Cup Handicap at Detroit Race Course
  • Most lucrative victories came in a pair of $200,000 races -- the 1992 Top Flight Handicap at Aqueduct with Firm Stance and the 2000 Fayette Breeders' Cup Stakes at Keeneland with Jadada, a half brother to Shaconage
  • Despite being stabled at Churchill Downs for two decades, had to wait until 2004 for his first stakes victory with Shaconage in the Argent Mortgage Stakes on May 1. After the victory Shirota said: "Cha-Ching! I've been coming to Churchill Downs for 20 years now and this is my first stakes win here. To do it on Derby Day is even more special."
  • Shirota admitted he entered Shaconage in the race at the urging of Churchill Downs executive Donnie Richardson. "You've got to give him credit," Shirota said, pointing to Richardson in the winner's circle.
  • Added his second Churchill added-money score when Shaconage captured the Locust Grove Handicap on June 26. "I can't say this is better than the Derby Day win — the first one was really a thrill. But the way she won this race — it can't get much better than this."
  • Based at Churchill Downs, Shirota typically has less than 10 horses in training
  • Shaconage, his only Breeders' Cup starter, finished 6th in the 2004 Filly & Mare Turf. She won stakes races as a 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old and earned over $500,000.
