- Racing Background: Winchell Thoroughbreds is a partnership of Joan Winchell and her son, Ron, who are continuing the racing operation started by the late Verne H. Winchell, Joan's husband and Ron's father ... The elder Winchell, who died at age 87 in 2002, founded the donut company Winchell's in 1948 and later was CEO and chairman of Denny's restaurants. He bred and raced champions Mira Femme and Tight Spot (the latter raced in partnership) ... His other top horses include Donut King, Olympio, Sea Cadet, Fleet Renee and Valiant Nature ... Verne Winchell raced On Target, fourth in the 1994 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Exetera, seventh in the 1995 Juvenile ... Tight Spot finished in a dead heat for ninth in the 1991 Breeders' Cup Mile ... Verne Winchell also bred Classy Women, who in 1991 set a then 5 1/2-furlong world record on turf of 1:01 at Hollywood Park, and Premium Win, the dam of both Tight Spot and Valiant Nature, who in 1985, equaled the then 5 1/2-furlong world record on dirt of 1:01 3/5
- Breeding/Racing Operation: Winchell Thoroughbreds campaigns 2009 graded stakes winners War Echo and Hightap. War Echo, a homebred, won the G3 Silverbulletday Stakes, while Hightap, who is raced in parntership with Gainesway Thoroughbreds, took the G3 Dogwood Stakes and G3 Iowa Oaks. Both are daughters of Tapit, who won the 2003 G1 Wood Memorial for the Winchells and now stands at Gainesway ... Also have been represented this year by homebred stakes winners Simplify and Classify... As breeder, the Winchells have been represented in 2009 by Pyro, a 4-year-old son of Pulpit who won the G1 Forego Stakes for Godolphin. Pyro ran through his 3-year-old season as a homebred for the Winchells, who sold him sold privately. His victory in the Forego was just his second start for Goldolphin. In 2007, Pyro earned a start in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile with his second-place finish in the G1 Champagne behind War Pass. He was unable to turn the tables on his rival in the Juvenile and was second once again. In 2008, he emerged as a leading candidate for the G1 Kentucky Derby with victories in the G3 Risen Star Stakes and G2 Louisiana Derby, but finished eighth in the "Run for the Roses." He returned to form in the G3 Northern Dancer at Churchill in June 2008, which was his last victory for the Winchells. His last start for his breeders came in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, where he finished sixth behind Albertus Maximus ... Raced 2005 G1 Kentucky Oaks winner Summerly, a $410,000 Keeneland September yearling purchase. The Winchells sold her as a broodmare for $3.3 million at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton November select mixed sale, the second-highest price at the sale ... In partnership with Spendthrift Farm, raced the Verne Winchell-bred Grade 1 winner Cuvee, 12th in the 2003 Breeders' Cup Juvenile and 13th in the 2004 Sprint. He also stands at Gainesway....Also campaigned multiple graded stakes winner Zanjero, who won the 2008 G2 Kentucky Cup Classic in his final start. He stood his first season at Millenium Farms near Lexington, Ky., in 2009 ...The Winchells own Corinthia Farm near Lexington. They renamed the former Oakwind Farm, which was started by Verne Winchell, after a house that was built on the property in 1854 ... Farm manager David Fiske has worked for the Winchell family for over 25 years.
