- Born: April 24, 1948, Crescent City, Calif.
- Residence: Castro Valley, Calif.
- Racing Background: Grew up on the racetrack … Gilchrist is a third-generation horseman and began working for his father, “Boots” Gilchrist, as a youngster … Served with the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army in Vietnam in 1968 and ’69 and saw heavy combat duty ... After being discharged from the service, he returned to the racetrack
- Racing Career: Took out his trainer's license in 1973 in Arizona … Has trained horses in the Bay Area since the late 1970s … Has saddled more than 1,400 winners during his career with a winning percentage above 20 percent … His father trained Gold Seal, which Gilchrist describes as the “family's meal ticket during the 1970s.” Gold Seal raced from 1971 until 1980, winning 31 of 118 starts with $214,719 in earnings ... First stakes winner trained in Gilchrist’s name was Walk Faster in 1977 … Has conditioned five Northern California horses of the year in Juan Barrera (1981), Minutes Away (1985), Soviet Problem (1994), Work the Crowd (1995) and Lost in the Fog (2005) … Soviet Problem, a filly, was one of the most dominant sprinters during the 1990s. In the first match race ever contested at Golden Gate Fields, she defeated the gelding Lazor by 4 1/2 lengths. Soviet Problem was Gilchrist's first Breeders' Cup starter, finishing second, a head behind Cherokee Run in the ’94 Sprint … Lost in the Fog, purchased as a 2-year-old in 2004 by Gilchrist on behalf of Harry Aleo, won the first ten starts of his career at ages two and three. Included was the first Grade 1 victory of Gilchrist’s career in the King's Bishop at Saratoga ... The colt sustained his first loss in the 2005 Breeders' Cup Sprint but had accomplished enough to be named that year’s Eclipse Award winner as champion sprinter … Though he came back to the track to win as a 4-year-old, Lost in the Fog was diagnosed with inoperable cancer in the summer of 2006. With Gilchrist by his side, Lost in the Fog was euthanized on Sept. 17, 2006 … Gilchrist signed the ticket for Aleo at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale at Timonium in May 2005, spending $140,000 for Smokey Stover. The son of Put It Back was a leading sprinter in 2007, winning five of six starts, four of them in stakes, including the G2 Potrero Grande Breeders’ Cup Stakes and the G3 Bay Meadows Breeders’ Cup Handicap. He finished ninth in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Sprint … Aleo died at age 88 on June 21, 2008, the day before the Lost in the Fog Stakes was run on closing day ... Gilchrist had trained for Aleo for 29 years, one of the most enduring partnerships in racing. "I'll never replace that guy as a friend or as a client," he told the San Francisco Chronicle. "They don't make people like Harry Aleo anymore, but why would you want to? He was one of a kind." ... Additional major stakes horses Gilchrist has trained include High Resolve, Wild Promises, Heaven on Hold, Sky Mystic, Always Best, Nediym, Teresa Mc, Bigger Issues, Bargain Prince, Reasonable Force, Psychic Power, Juan's Sister, Classic Go Go, Beyond Brilliant, and Wild Wonder ... Shipped Aleo’s Vicarino to capture G3 Azalea Breeders’ Cup Stakes in Calder’s Summit of Speed in 2006 for one of her six career stakes wins, then returned to win the race in 2008 with Indyanne. The filly added the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (G3) at Keeneland on October 4 to earn a possible start in the Filly & Mare Sprint … Gilchrist likes to keep his stable small to be able to give personalized attention to both the horses and his clients, and currently conditions 25 horses. ... Through Oct. 8, 2008, had 38 wins from 125 starts for earnings of $1,358,184.
