  • Racing Background: Father Lee and uncle Byron also were trainers … Cousin Jacque Fulton is an ex-trainer … Grew up in Rancho Santa Fe … First job at the track was with the late trainer Willard Proctor … Spent nine years with Richard Mandella before going on his own in 1987.
  • Racing Career: First stakes win came with Toulange in the 1987 Fleet Treat at Del Mar … Trained Gray Slewpy, a former Santa Anita track record holder at 5 1/2 furlongs and winner of the 1992 Triple Bend Breeders’ Cup Handicap. Gray Slewpy, Hendricks’ first Breeders’ Cup starter, finished 11th in the 1992 Sprint … Brother Derek, his second Breeders' Cup starter, finished fourth behind Stevie Wonderboy in the 2005 Juvenile after winning the Norfolk Stakes (gr. II). The following year the colt swept three stakes, including the Santa Anita Derby, and started as second choice in the Kentucky Derby. Brother Derek finished in a dead heat for fourth with Jazil and had another fourth-place finish in the Preakness. He finished fifth in the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic as one of only two Kentucky Derby starters from that year to make the race ... Hendricks saddled his first grade I winner, Private Persuasion, in the 1995 Vanity at Hollywood Park ... Won the 1999 Hollywood Oaks with Smooth Player, who also won the Lady’s Secret Breeders’ Cup and the Las Palmas the following year … Conditioned multiple graded stakes winner Reba’s Gold, who earned $717,422 during his career … Additional graded stakes winners include Feverish, Stylish Star, Bountiful Native and Blushing Heiress ... In addition to Daytona (Ire), Hendricks’ current stable includes Runaway Dancer, winner of the 2007 Sunset Handicap (gr. IIT), who continues to race at age 9. Hendricks is freshening graded stakes-placed Indian Sun, who finished fourth in the 2008 Arkansas Derby (gr. II), for a fall campaign and also has stakes-placed Lavender Sky in the barn ... On July 7, 2004, Hendricks suffered paralysis from the chest down as the result of a spinal cord injury incurred in a motocross accident. Assistant trainer Francisco (Cisco) Alvarado took over his stable during his hospitalization and rehabilitation. Hendricks returned to the track on Aug. 24, 2004 and saddled Littlebitofzip to a victory at Del Mar.
