  • Born: Jan. 6, 1960 in Boston, Mass.
  • Residence: Lincoln University, Pa.
  • Family: wife, Lillian ... father, Pete also is a trainer ... older brother Robert, a former trainer, now works as a jockey agent ... Three members of the Klesaris family saddled winners on Sept. 26, 2005 at Delaware Park – Robert in the first race, Steve in the third and seventh races, and Peter in the ninth race
  • Racing Background: Saddled his first winner, Stronger, at Suffolk Downs in 1978 at age 18 ... After a few years on his own, Klesaris went to work for his brother Robert as his assistant at Garden State Park ... Saddled Passing Ships to victory in the 1990 Kings Cup in Saudi Arabia ... The Klesaris brothers joined forces on the New York racing scene from 1990-92 before Steve became a jockey’s agent, working for Richard Migliore and Herb McCauley for about 18 months from 1994-1995 ... Had immediate stakes success upon his return to training, winning the 1995 Hawthorne Gold Cup and Gallant Fox Handicap with Yourmissinthepoint. Klesaris won the Gallant Fox again in 1996 with Ave’s Flag
  • Racing Career: Based in the Mid-Atlantic region, Klesaris trains one of the leading juvenile fillies in the country, Mani Bhavan . . . An impressive winner of her debut at Delaware Park, Mani Bhavan was then shipped to Saratoga and won the grade 2 Adirondack by seven lengths ... Following that victory, Mani Bhavan’s owner, Mike Ryan, sold a 50 percent share of the filly to Klesaris’ main client, Jeff Puglisi ... Klesaris also owns a small share of her ... In her first start for her new connections, Mani Bhavan was victorious in the grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga ... “She’s a talented filly,” Klesaris said, “She’s a proven grade 1 winner. Now it’s a question of whether she can stretch her speed out around two turns. She has amazing quickness.”  ... Another of Klesaris' top horses is Miraculous Miss, who finished second in last year’s inaugural Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint as the trainer’s first Breeders’ Cup starter ... She also was  second in the 2008 Princess Rooney and Ballerina, a pair of grade 1 stakes ... Another top horse for Klesaris in 2008 is Roman Emperor who defeated Da’ Tara in the 2008 Barbaro Stakes at Pimlico on the Preakness undercard ... Roman Emperor was given a freshening after that victory and is not expected to run again until this winter at Santa Anita, while Da’ Tara won the Belmont Stakes three weeks later ... “Da’ Tara’s victory in the Belmont certainly legitimizes what Roman Emperor has done. We’re looking forward to get him back,” Klesaris said ... Klesaris and Puglisi have been active at the sales lately, buying approximately 30 horses who are now 2-year-olds for roughly $4.5 million ... In 2007, Klesaris trained Diabolical, who would have been one of the favorites for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint based on his winning performance in the Alfred G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga. But in early September, Jeff Puglisi and Klesaris, also part-owner of Diabolical, sold him to Darley for an undisclosed price ... Earlier in that year, Diabolical was second in the Carter and won the Maryland Sprint on the Preakness undercard ... Klesaris missed that victory at Pimlico after suffering minor injuries in a head-on car crash the day before the race. “After something like that accident, you appreciate being able to lay on a couch and watch your horse run in a stakes,” Klesaris said. “I just as easily could have been watching nothing at all. It teaches you not to take anything for granted in life.” ... Diabolical was one of three horses purchased as 2-year-olds by Puglisi and Klesaris for a combined $1.2 million ... The other two were Miraculous Miss and Master of Disaster ... Master of Disaster, winner of the 2006 Majestic Prince and Oh Say stakes, ran second to Henny Hughes in the 2005 Saratoga Special ... Saddled multiple-stakes winner Misty Sixes, who he claimed for $40,000, and also won the Jersey Derby and Hill Prince with Happy Trails, a $30,000 claim. ... Won his 1,000th race on October 4, 2008 at Delaware Park when Tanganyika won a maiden claiming race by 14 lengths.
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Stable currently numbers 90 horses, most of them owned by Puglisi ... He keeps most of his horses at Fair Hill in Maryland and Delaware Park  ... He races primarily in New York and the Mid-Atlantic region for most of the year and usually winters in Florida, but is considering sending a string to California for the first time this year. ... Through Oct. 5, 2008, Klesaris has won 110 races from 416 starts, and his runners earned $4,503,080.
