Born: Nov. 6, 1948, Marly-le-Roi, France. She was christened Christiane but is known as Criquette ... Resident: Chantilly, France ... Family: husband Gilles Maarek, a racing journalist, and one daughter Patricia, from a previous marriage ... Patricia is married to trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias and has three children ... Head-Maarek is the eldest of the three daughters of former trainer Alec Head and is the sister of former top jockey (now trainer) Freddie Head ... Racing Background: She rode ponies at the age of four and began riding out for her father at the age of nine ... Rode as an amateur in 17 ladies' races, winning on her debut and never finishing out of the first four ... Training Career: She first took out a license to train in 1978 having previously been assistant to her father … Her first winner was on March 5 at Rouen … She trained 35 winners in her first season, won the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in her second season, and has been champion trainer in France once, in 1986. Numerically, her best French season was in 1987 with 107 wins ... The best horses that she has trained include Three Troikas, Sigy, Ma Biche, Bering, Ravinella, Hatoof, Anabaa and Egyptband … Her most recent group 1 success came when American Post landed the French 1,000 Guineas in May 2004 ... She ended 2004 in eighth place in the French trainers' championship with 66 wins from 850 runners ... She began 2005 with 180 horses and, up to Oct. 13, is in 12th place in the trainers' standings with 33 wins from 279 runners ... Her stable this year includes Prix Thomas Bryon winner Set Alight. Her closest finish with eight previous starters in Breeders' Cup races was the second by Hatoof in the 1994 Turf … She is president of the French Trainers Association and has been a registered bloodstock agent since 1976 ...
