  • Quick facts about Jerry Bailey:
    • He had a pony as a child, but he got interested in Thoroughbreds at 11 when his father James, a Texas dentist, claimed some horses at Sunland Park, N.M., near El Paso, Texas.
    • Began riding at Sunland in November 1974 ... Moved his tack on a permanent basis to New York in 1982 but winters in Florida.
    • Among his thousands of graded stakes winners that he rode, Bailey will be best remembered as the regular jockey of Cigar, who tied the record for consecutive wins at 16, including an undefeated Horse of the Year season in 1995.
    • Leads all jockeys in Breeders' Cup victories (15) highlighted by five Classics with Black Tie Affair (1991), Arcangues (1993), Concern (1994), Cigar (1995) and Saint Liam (2005), his final Breeders' Cup mount.
    • Has won each Triple Crown race twice -- the 1996 Kentucky Derby with Grindstone and 1993 Derby with Sea Hero; the 2000 Preakness Stakes with Red Bullet; the 1991 Preakness and Belmont stakes with Hansel; and the 2003 Belmont with Empire Maker.
    • Won four of the first 10 runnings of the Dubai World Cup, including the inaugural running in 1996 on Cigar
    • Awarded the 1992 George Woolf Award, chosen by The Jockeys' Guild and presented at Santa Anita Park ... Also presented with the 1993 Mike Venezia Award from the New York Racing Association.
    • Inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame in 1995.
    • In 2001 he won the All-Star Jockey Championship at Lone Star Park.
    • Former national president of The Jockeys' Guild but resigned from the board of directors in July 2001 over differences with the organization's new management team.
    • Won a record seven Eclipse Awards as outstanding jockey: 1995-97 and 2000-04.
    • Signed in 2005 with IMG for exclusive representation in broadcasting and marketing deals.
    • Teamed with Tom Pedulla of USA TODAY to write his autobiography, “Against the Odds, Riding for My Life,” in which he detailed, among other things, his battle with alcoholism. The book was published in April, 2006.
    • Upon retirement, took on a new career as a television racing analyst on ABC and ESPN.
